In the Bhagavadgita 10th chapter, we have these two verses:

आयुधानामहं वज्रं धेनूनामस्मि कामधुक् ।
प्रजनश्चास्मि कन्दर्पः सर्पाणामस्मि वासुकिः ॥ २८ ॥

अनन्तश्चास्मि नागानां वरुणो यादसामहम् ।
पितॄणामर्यमा चास्मि यमः संयमतामहम् ॥ २९ ॥

...I am Vaasuki among 'sarpa-s' and Ananta among 'naaga-s'

Has anyone explained the distinction between the two - Sarpa and Naaga?  Anandagiri, in the gloss says: सर्पा नागाश्च जातिभेदात् भिद्यन्ते  - the two differ in species.

Thanks Sir for the useful information giving the distinction.

We also see that the two are used as synonyms too:

नागेन्द्रहाराय... नागभूषण.... सर्पोर्भूषितकंठकर्णविवरे... in describing Shiva.

As heard in some Upanyasam by Sri Velukkudi, Sarpa has one head; Naga has multiple heads. Adisesha is said to have 1000 heads in its grand manifestation, but in temples like Srirangam etc we see 5 heads; in other temples 7 heads etc.
The key difference comes from single Vs multiple heads.

In Ramanuja Gita Bhasyam for the shlokas, I see the explanation as सर्पाः एकशिरसः ……  नागा बहुशिरसः

Krishna Chaitanya.

Thanks for the links you have provided:  The first of them https://hinduism.stackexchange.com/questions/31784/difference-between-naaga-and-sarpa

gives information on Sarpa and Naga and also points to the BG 10th Chapter references where Krishna uses the terms quite opposite to what is stated in the Bhagavatam.
