Namaste,

I need b/w illustrations for a Sanskrit book, different stories. A friend of mine gave me "Sahasra Siraccheda Apurva Chintamani- NagaSri- Balananda Bommala Series, Navaratna Book Centre, Vijayavada", lovely illustrations. Are there different styles available, comic like heroes for stories in Sanskrit that could be re-used?

The drawing styles exemplified by the images shared by Dr Mārcis Gasūns belong to early modern illustration styles inherited from folk illustration styles.

One such style which has a vibrant centuries old tradition in Telangana is the Kakipadagala or Nakashi style used in the scroll-based folk narrative performance art forms.

The art form is surviving in a village called Cheryal and is now widely known after the name of the village.

Sharing samples.

om. in fact such illustrations have an aura of innocence about them, they are enlightening and ennobling at once.in pattacitra-s of odisha now practised in raghurajpur heritage village9one can find in net) and elsewhere in odisha and also the miniature paintings of kangra illustrating the epics and other episodes are recommended .regards. smmishra

The Bommala (illustrated) series of publications have been quite popular in Telugu. Puranic stories too were published as part of such series by various publishers right from the early 20th century, from Madras (Chennai), Vijayawada, Eluru, Rajahmundry and other places.

one recent example is a bommala bhagavatamu that is here

Great example, why thank you. Just a few more. So best suited are black and white, not color miniatures. Thanks for the Ramayana link, would need Savitri as well.

Thanks for the many answers! Sorry to ask about children pictures to learned men who do not deal with illustrations on a daily manner.

Yes, indeed, if I manage to find a .pdf collection online. I can remove the color after and get some really simple pictures - exactly what I need.
For now only https://www.scribd.com/ is what I found, a few are there scattered around.

Old Chandamama magazine issues, Dr. K.S.Kannan, pre-2010 or pre-1950. I'm afraid I'm too young to understand where is the line.

Nagaraj Paturi, yes, early modern illustration styles inherited from folk illustration styles sounds good.

Surendramohan Mishra, the search gives fine results as
http://www.kashgar.com.au/site/assets/media/catalog/furniture/thumbs/ganesh_patachitra_top.jpg - but sadly they can't be used in a book that does not has any colors. I'll use them on web, but can't in a book, sadly.

Please consider Copy-write laws before making requests for scans of books which are published recently. Please purchase the book and encourage Sanskrit studies Thanks

Sure, after I have a scan of the book I'll be able to contact the printer, but not before. I do not want to break any laws - no I do not want to.

Your statement itself is contradictory you have to first contact the publisher and then scan a book. Your printer does not come into the picture at all.  I encourage people to scan and share Sanskrit and Indological which are old  hard to find or long out of print for private academic studies or articles for the purpose of criticism or research but not for a book easily available at Rs 70 printed in the year 2012 including its covers or pictures that it may contain
Please continue the discussions just mentioned this as many have very good intentions but may not be aware of restrictions laws impose. This is not a legal advise
or a moderator note. This is my personal view.
