Dear Vidvans,

I am trying to learn Sanskrit through Self study from basics.

Can the scholars here suggest good reliable books with English as the medium of teaching?
I am familiar with the devanagari script.

Thanks,

Niranjan

JustDear Niranjan,

You can profitably read the English version of Sanskrit Svayam Shikshak by Pandit Shripad Damodar Satvalekar of Svadhya Mandal,Killa Paradi,dist.Valsad,Gujarat.

He has claimed that those who master this book can easily understand the Ramayana and Mahabharat. In his latest edition,he has added some matter on Vedas also.
This book is available in Gujarati, Hindi,Marathi and English.

You can get details from their site.

Dear Niranjan Ji,

Recently, Govt of India has launched an online learning portal swayam.gov.in

There is a short term course in learning Sanskrit offered by IIT. The link for the course is: https://swayam.gov.in/courses/4790-july-2018-introduction-to-basic-spoken-sanskrit

They might offer a new batch soon which is based on weekly study.

Dr. Y N  Rao and Shri J S Sastry also conduct online email based coaching which is a year long course. The last batch started in Feb 2018.

Best regards

Hardik Joshi

Respected Scholars,

I had visited the place (Swadhyay Mandal - Kila Pardi)  in the month of June. Unfortunately, the work of Pandit Satawlekar is facing monetary troubles. They do have lot of land near Valsad, Gujarat but could not manage it. Most of the scholarly work remains unpublished and few books have gone out of print. Luckily I managed to buy few books which were in not so good condition.

They also have a small Gaushala and residential Gurukul for Vedic studies. Few attempts are being made by the trustees to legalize the courses and get funds from the state Govt. I think the same status might be for all Gurukuls across India. As of now, there is support of RSS upto some extent.

It will be a great service if any of us can help them to restore the work of Pandit Satawlekar. The trustees are helpful and would be happy to get help from any of us.

Best regards,

Hardik Joshi

Dear Sanskrit Lovers,

In July 2011,some Trustees of the Svadhya Mandal visited me at Vadodara. We planned and contacted some younger Sanskrit scholars to translate into English the Vedic works of Pt Satavalekarji.

The scholars also were very enthusiastic and a couple of meetings was held in Pune.I,however, could not attend those meetings. The monetary part was taken care of,but, unfortunately, nothing tangible has been done, for reasons not known to me.

If some influential person takes up this responsibility, then, that task could be achieved.

Best luck in that direction.

Prof. Siddharth Y Wakankar.

Sir:

The Satvalekar book only seems available in Hindi any English versions?

This looks promising, but this includes other courses like history etc along with Sanskrit.

Has anyone tried this?

Or should I try a new post?

The only best book available either for self study or with a teacher is, First Book of Sanskrit and Second Book of Sanskrit. By RG Bhandarkar. M R Kales Higher Sanskrit Grammar. This is a challenge, there is not a single topic left in practical grammar. There is not a single famous word left in its vocabulary.

I have lost more than 10 years of my precisous life because of self study misconception.

harih om,

please search for Vadhyar RS on archive.org.  Patiently scroll down the search results. You would fine Infant Reader and subsequent grade school books. They all have English as the initial medium.  Hope this helps. Namaste.

Harih Om,

Sir, thank you SO MUCH for this message !

I purchased in 1989 "A Short History of Sanskrit Literature" (1984), published by RS Vadhyar & Sons. This small book has covered in so brief almost the entire Skt Literature. It was very very useful for a working person like me and not having any time to attend Sanskrit classes and no guide that time to suggest good books in Skt.

  Namaste and best regards

Sri Ramanandaji: You wrote--"This is a challenge, there is not a single topic left in practical grammar. There is not a single famous word left in its vocabulary. "

What is a challenge? Can you be a bit more specific please?

"I have lost more than 10 years of my precisous life because of self study misconception. "

Are you suggesting to avoid self-study?

The challenge is Bhandarkar books (the idea) are the only gift for human kind for learning any language not only tSanskrit. No book can replace.

Avoid self study. Save time.

I simply don't agree. Through self-study I have studied Panini directly from Astadhyayi (with Hindi commentary) and contributed many articles on the Sarasvatikanthabharana of Bhojadeva.

You should not certify yourselves. First drawback of self study is dur ahankaara.
1. He is asking about sanskrit not panini.
2. Writing article is different than understanding difficult verses lines in sanskrit is different. And writing flawless sanskrit.
3. Even though a traditional method used in Tenali vyakarana examinations, the certificate proclaiming Vyakarana Ratna is faulty with respect to grammar like pareeksaayaam utteerNaha. Traditional scholars are making mistakes Kimuta self study

I simply don't agree with any panditakeeTaas or with you.
