Respected Scholars,

Namo Namah.

Kindly look at the following verse:

janmanā jāyate śūdraḥ
saṁskārād bhaved dvijaḥ
veda-pāṭhād bhaved vipro
brahma jānatīti brāhmaṇaḥ

The first part of the verse (janmana jayate sudrah samskarad bhaved dvijah)
can be traced to the following verse from the Skanda Purana (NAgara-khaNDa
239.31):

janmanA jayate zUdraH   saMskarAd dvija ucyate

Sanskrit:
https://www.wisdomlib.org/hinduism/book/skanda-purana-sanskrit/d/doc807721.h
tml

English translation:
https://www.wisdomlib.org/hinduism/book/the-skanda-purana/d/doc502218.html

However, I couldn't trace out the source for the second part of the verse.

Any help in this regard would be appreciated.

Thanks for considering the query,

das,

Jaya Nityananda Dasa

Atri smriti 138-140 and may be yajnavalkya smriti also describes a verse which is completely opposite of this verse. The verse says--

The famous verse , janmana jayate sudra.....is quoted by Adi Shankaracarya Bhagavad Pada in his commentry to काठकोपनिषद 2-1-2  he says -

Although I couldn't find the above commentary in other publications  but I could find it in the following archive published by Oriental supplying agency

Also in the book Sannyasa Dharma Samhita by svami atmanand He quotes in  page no 14

From subhashita- sangraha 226

Can you try to find more into which exact smrti  mentions the above verse?

Namaste,

There is a correction. The passage beginning with स्वाभाविकमिति attributed to Sankarabhashya is actually from Balabodhini a sub-commentary by SS Pathak on both Sankarabhashya and the Rangaramanujabhashya, which begins from p. 95 of the book.

regards
shankara

Namo namah,

It is very difficult to find the verse due to not having access to all manuscripts. But still there are some references which can be the clue for this.

There is a serial based on Upanishads known as Upanisad Ganga produced by Chinmay mission quotes the verse in one of the episodes refering atri smriti 141 . The link is as follows

Across Internet I could find only two different editions . One of those edition has the verse -- janmana brahmano jneya... I couldn't find the text as it was mentioned in Upanisad Ganga serial. The possible reason could be that they have taken the verse from different edition which we don't have access.

Furthermore, there is a edition of Manu Smriti translated by Rama Chandra Verma Shastri. In that edition chapter 1 text 110 contains this verse. The link for the book is as follows

https://archive.org/details/qAXB_manu-smriti-with-the-notes-by-ram-chandra-verma-shastri-vidya-vihar-new-delhi

The L.R. Vaidya. Sanskrit-English dictionary published in 1916 in page number 515 quotes the verse with following reference. It says

brAhmaRa {% (1) a. (f. uft) %} 1. Relating to or becoming a Brāhmaṇa 2. given by a Brāhmaṇa.brAhmaRa {% (II) m. %} 1. A member of the first of the four primary castes of the Hindus, a Brāhmana

https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.446

A good reference:
