Ayodhya: Mythical or Real?

Dear list,

Hans Bakker argued in his influential study of Ayodhya (1986), among other things, that Ayodhya, the capital of the Ikshvakus, was an imaginary city. Some historians and archaeologists uncritically accepted Bakker's findings. Those who did not accept his claims, so far as I know, did not bother to question or controvert them. This note critically examines one of Bakker's contentions—namely, that Ayodhya was a mythical city—and shows that the contention is both logically untenable and unsupported by the available evidence.
