Subject: Madhu Anupana in Talisadi Churnam??
To: panch...@rediffmail.com

Respected Sir,

I would like to know some doubt regarding Anupana.
Why madhu is given  in the case of Talisadi churna as anupana eventhough talisadi churna contains Usna Dravyas?

" Usnamushnarthamushne cha yuktham cha usnernihanti tat/"

                                                                                       (Ash.Hr.Su 5)

Please kindly inform the answer.
Thank You.

Namaskar,

the ushne-refers for hot in relation to temperature. As honey after heating changes to unconducive properties.
Basically it is more commonly used to break kapha anubhanda, however with Talasadi churna its adhikar being agnidipan used so

Dear friends,

In this particular case honey is used as "an Anupana'  to the Churna probably for increasing its palatability and removal of the after-taste as well as for the convenience of administration, so that inconvenience of taking the drug in the powder form is taken care of. For that hardly a drop of honey may be required. I am not an Ayurvedic doctor but I remember that one Ayurvedic doctor was telling me that the quantity of honey used should be minimal (probably because it is also an usna item), Your feed-back will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Sunil KB

In the System of Ayurvedic medicine Anupana Dravyas (mediums) have different purposes on different occasions. They are not just for increasing palatability or for the removal of the after-taste. This statement is made not to deny other scholars views but to introduce certain interesting aspects of Ayurveda.  I request the scholars not to misunderstand me.

Always the Anupana Dravyas (mediums) in Ayurveda play a very important role which is equal to that of the main medicines of any particular course of treatment.
Anupanas have many miraculous effects.
1. The same medicine if anupana is changed works in a different way.
2. Certain medicines in the absence of their prescribed Anupanams will not work at all.
For instance: a particular medicine if taken with hot water cures cough with phlegm. The same medicine if taken with milk cures dry cough. Here the hot water and milk are not just mediums added to increase palatability.
3. Certain anupanas make even severely poisonous medicines very much tamed and soft.
As a person hailed from a family known for its scholarship in Ayurveda through 12 generations I have witnessed thousands of instances where anupana plays an equal role with the main medicine.

About the Honey, Its types and curative powers:
Honey depending on its source of production, regions of its availability and the flowers from which it is collected has different natures, functions and effects.
a) According to the humors Honey is of three kinds: Honey with Pitta Humor, Honey with Sleshma Humor and Honey with Vata Humor too.
b) Depending on its regions of its availability also it has different natures:
  i) The honey that is available from Kashmir and Kanyakumari (in our experience) is sleshma pradhana. It is laghu by nature and helps in curing many paitya and vata dosha pradhana ailments.
ii) The honey from West Bengal is of mixed nature of Sleshma and Paitya. The nearer its source to Sea shore the higher will be the Paitya Pradhanya in it.
iii) The honey from Madhya Pradesh is curative of Vata dosha ailments.
iv) The honey from the river side flowery gardens is more virtuous that that from the forests. Similarly the honey from hill areas preferably near the hill-stream side grooves of trees is more qualitative than that from the forests.

v) Similarly the Honey from the Lotus flowers is the best one of all honeys with high curative efficacy. It can cure even all kinds of Netra doshas.

Here is an account of different categories of Honey and their uses:
माक्षिकं पौत्तिकं क्षौद्रं भ्रामरं मधुविस्तरात्।
माक्षिकं तैलसकाशं पौत्तिकं घृतसन्निभम्॥
क्षौद्रं कपिलवर्णं स्यात् भ्रामरं स्फटिकोपम़म्॥
There are four types of Honey when broadly classified:
1. Makshika 2. Pauttika 3. kshaudra and 4. Bhraamara
Of these four types : Makshika resembles oil in appearance.
Pauttika is like Ghee.
kshaudra is tawny in color.
Bhramara is as transparent and white as Crystal.
Of these four types of Honey Makshika is the best one. It is curative of some kinds of eye diseases (even at chronic stage). It is Laghu by nature.
Pauttika Honey is Ruksha, Ushna tattva pradhana and causes Overheat, Thirsty feeling, aggravates Vata Dosha ailments and so on.
Kshaudra Honey has many qualities of Makshika honey and it even helps in curing Madhu Meha (Diabetes).
Bhraamara Honey is curative of Raktapitta Dosha. But it prevents free flow of Urine. It is Guru by nature.
Unfortunately in the modern times we are not testing all these things while using Honey and just go for Branded honeys like: Dabur Honey or Lion Honey and so on. Instead we should try to get honey from Srikrishna Pharmacy, Amrtasar specifying which type of honey we need following the recommendation of Ayurvedic experts.
Can we use boiled or heated honey?
If honey collected by the bees from the poisonous flowers such as Dhattura and others it should not be used. It is also poisonous and harmful to us.
Similarly the honey kept for a long time under the hot Sun or boiled honey or heated honey should not be used as such honey kills the persons.
Usually Honey should not be consumed during Grishma season and also in hot countries particularly with hot dravyas. But they are also recommended on certain occasions such as Chardana Kriya (Vomiting acitivity) and so on for wait loss and other purposes. But it should be done under the constant supervision of Doctors.
This is just a general introduction to the Nature, types and curative efficacies of Honey. To learn more about Honey and other Anupanas there are many other Best Ayurvedic Experts in our Bharatiya Vidvat Parishat and out side also.
Warm regards,
Dr. Rani Sadasiva Murty

Dear Dr, Raniji,

Thank you for the detailed mail. The original question was why honey, despite being an ushna anupana, is being recommended for the ushna churna. As Pauttika Honey is Ruksha, Ushna tattva pradhana and causes Overheat, which honey, according to you will be suitable for the Talasadi churna.

Secondly are you aware of the different types of honey available in Mahabaleashwar in Maharashtra and one of them reportedly cures Diabetes,

Regards,
Sunil KB

Respected Sunil Ji!
Talisadi Curna  is curative of different types of coughs, TB, Asthma, haemoptysis, epilepsy and such other diseases.
It is one of the set of medicines prescribed for curing such diseases.
Any powders used for curing cough are generally mixed with honey as honey also curative of coughs.
All Ushnatattva pradhana curnas are suggested for curing phlegm based cough. In such case Pautta Honey can be used as this also is Ushna tattva pradhana.
So in Talisadi Curna Pautta Honey can be used.
If the cough is dry cough without phlegm other kinds of honey also can be used.
I don't have the knowledge of the honey of the Mahabaleswar of Maharashtra. But I can guess that it must be a virtuous one as its from the source place of one of the great rivers of country - River Krishna. It must have been surrounded by Hill areas with sweet water streams. So the honey of that are also curative of many diseases and as it was stated in your posting it can be a curative of Diabetes.
Warm Regards,

Thank you Dr. Murtyji for the very good elaborations. As regards the honey, which cures diabetes, it is claimed that honey bees collected that from the jambhul trees, which probably grow in abundance there and it is also known that the jambhul fruit is good for the diabetics. You view aout the river Krishna is also correct as it is said to have originated from Mahabaleshwar.

Sunil Ji!
Namaste!
Thanks for the information about the Honey from the Mahabaleswar. Yes the reason stated by you is true. From the flowers of which ever tree the honey is collected it consists of the curative effects of that tree.
As the honey of this area is collected from jambu trees it obviously has such effects.
Some more facts about Honey I would like to add in this context:
1. Even in case of severe burns if honey is applied it cures fast the burns without leaving even the mark of burns. First application of honey in place of burns should be done with 5 to 20 minutes of the occurrence of burning with out washing the burns with water. It not only helps in curing the burns it doesn't allow the formation of bubbles of the skin in the burnt area. It protects the melanin also.
2. If the lotus honey is used thrice a day for forty days even after 40s (age)  there won't be any need of power glasses. It assuredly gives us better vision.
3. Honey and Ghee
While mixing honey and ghee there is a particular order.
If honey is mixed in ghee (in equal quantities)  it works like Amrta. If ghee is mixed in honey (in equal quantities) it becomes poisonous. (घृते मधूप्तं पीयूषं मधुनाज्यं विषं यथा॥ ब्रह्मसिद्धान्ते प्रथमाध्याये ९० शोल्.) So while preparing Panchamrtams it is recommended to mix honey in ghee and not vice versa.
4. The test for Honey
Even if honey is filtered through a cloth for hundred times and seen after a day every time there will be a formation of pollen layer on its surface. This is the only traditional test for honey.
5. Old Honey
Honey, sugar and Jaggery (Gudam)  preserved for more than one year are considered old.
There are many more interesting facts about honey which can be known from Ayurvedic texts.
With warm regards,
Dr. Rani Sadasiva Murty

I would like to know some doubt regarding Anupana ......Anusree

there are many aspects related to अनुपानम्  discussed by सुश्रुत - including अनुपानम् - before/middle/after meal.
