Hindi गाँठ (gāṃṭh), meaning a knot, is feminine.  I think this Hindi word and Sanskrit ग्रंथ (grantha) are cognate. Grantha also means a knot, tying together with a string, and from these, a book.  But grantha is masculine in both Sanskrit and its tatsama form in Hindi.  So, can we infer that in tadbhava words, not only the form of the word but its gender too can change from that of the original and in tatsama, both the form and the gender are retained?

Namaste

On :< can we infer that in tadbhava words, not only the form of the word but its gender too can change from that of the original and in tatsama, both the form and the gender are retained?  > :

1. Deep Question.

2. Upfront answer:  No.  There is a need for a larger  framework of study of Indic Languages as ‘ Cognitive Linguistic studies’.

The translation of  ‘LINGA’ as equivalent by meaning and model of ‘ Gender’ is an inappropriate translation.

Samskruth  teams believe  that ‘ LINGA’  is also a ‘DARSHANA – UPADESHA- PRAKRIYAA JANYA’ – PADA LAKSHANA.

The transformed ‘ STREE –PRATYAYA- RULE GENERATED PADA’ has different connection to the Object Technicality and Function.

Gender Transfer- connect rule between  ‘Tatsama and Tadbhava’ cannot be generalized to a linear logical rule base for ‘ program execution in A.I systems ! So ALL MT (Machine Translations) driven by LEXICON MARKED LISTING of GENDER  forced in to TRANSLATION OUTPUT  need serious review.

This is a Linguist- Scholar Specialty work.

This is NOT Techno-linguists programming using part understanding of Panini for 40% of Total rule set provided in Ashtaadhyayi, and side lining the integrity of ‘ VYAKARANA’ as Vedanga – VAK-YOGA with  NIRUKTA.

Why – Need a reason?

2.1.  Tatsama to tadbhava involves a ‘ source language to target language’ base-shift.

2.2.  The GENDER ( Linga) of a given ‘ pada’ in Samskruth / Bhashaa has many different decision- criterion.

The decision criterion are like (a)  The gender ( Linga) of Prakruti ( given input to the process) (b) The ‘modifier implicated ( Stree-Pratyaya- janita)  (c ) The Rule and Process decided ( like Avyayi-bhava samasa / Krit – taddhita- pratyaya).  Samskruth Language Rules for LINGA NIRNAYA are NOT the same as in PRAKRUTH; Definitely NOT as in Modern English ( which has dropped off its classical legacy root base connections with Latin, Greek and host of other languages.

Irrespective of how sweet the ‘ River Water (Samskruth)’ was/ is before mixing in to the ‘ large water pool called Ocean (Prakruth/ English)’,  the Taste of ‘ Ocean Water’ remains salty !  The river merged in to Ocean has the advantage of being in the league of ALL RIVERS ( World Languages) and has run the risk of ‘ permanently losing its originality and sweetness’.

2.3.  All standard Prakrtuh grammar text –chapters  discussion has good pointers  as a special chapter on ‘Tadbhava –Gender’.

Unfortunate though, many schools teaching ‘Prakruth Linguistics under IE Linguistics framework ’ are happy to teach ‘letter

modifications to make form- explanation of tadbhava from tatsama  using ‘European Language rules’ for -phonetic lip

connection –audition impact- slackness in pronunciation.

2.4. What If – Brute force MT gets popular through Techno-Linguistic Outreach ?  Outcome is ‘Bhashaa- Naasha’ and ‘Loss of Atma-

Nirbharataa / acceptance of Dasya – Paara tantrya’  due to ‘ Corruption of Mother seeds of Language’.

These are connected implications that arise from the technicality of ‘ VARNA- SANKARA’   ADHARMA – KULA KSHAYA ( Gita: 1-39 to

1-41 applied in the context of ‘LANGUAGE WARS’.

Patanjali Yoga –sutra refers to such line of thinking  as ‘(BHASHAA) – ASHUDDHI  which blocks JNANA-DEEPTI.

Modern Socio-Linguists call such an effort for ‘ Language Purity’ as ‘ Purohita- Shaahi / Priestly hegemony to suppress  larger

sections of society from access to language of knowledge’.
