Rukmiṇī or Rugmiṇī (रुक्मिणी or रुग्मिणी)?

Which is correct, Rukmiṇī or Rugmiṇī (रुक्मिणी or रुग्मिणी)?  In older Malayalam literature, the name used to be written as Rugmiṇi (രുഗ്മിണി) but nowadays it appears that Rukmiṇi (രുക്മിണി) is more popular.  (Please note that in Malayalam, the word-final vowel is always hrasva – short – even for Sanskrit tatsama words irrespective of the vowel being long or short in the original Sanskrit word.)

रोच॑त॒ इति॒ तद् रु॒क्मम्। That which shines is rukmá.

हि॒र॒ण्यया॑र्थो॒ऽ॒यं शब्दः॑। Used generally for gold or golden objects.

यस्य॑ रु॒क्मं स रु॒क्मी। यस्या रु॒क्मं सा रु॒क्मिणी॑। यद्वा॑ रु॒क्मो वर्णो॒ यस्याः॑।

रथो॒ न रु॒क्मी (ऋ॰ १.६६.६) Like a golden chariot.

രുഗ്മിണി इत्य॒यं म॑लयाळवर्णधर्मानु॒पाल॑नादे॒व प्रयु॑क्तः॒ प्रति॑भाति।

രുഗ്മിണി looks like an example of Sanskrit words conforming to Malayalam phonology.

This is very interesting. It must explain why some old texts preferred the form rugmiNI. Personally, I am familiar only with rukmiNI.

I am attaching the relevant part from the Bhumika to Tatparyanirnaya for the convenience of scholars.
