This award is given to lay people or clergy, for distinguished service to the Church. It is the highest recognition the laity can receive from the Catholic Pope.
This medal/decoration is bestowed by the Holy See upon lay people who have rendered exemplary service to the Catholic Church.
This award is also known as the Cross of Honor or Decoration of Honor instituted by Pope Leo XIlI in 1888 to commemorate his 50th year as a priest.
