Norman Island Race Report and Results

[BVI Mountain Bike Club]

On 28 October the BVI Mountain Bike Club organized the annual Norman Island Race.  Thirty nine cyclists accepted the challenge comprising 27 adults and 12 cadets.  

The course was 4 laps of the trails making it the most challenging of all the courses for the year.  Gareth Thomas and Philippe Leroy led the pack up the first hill with Antony Spencer, Richard Morgan, Anghel George and Craig Bruntz in hot pursuit.  They were followed in intervals by Dave Pettigrew, Alastair Abrehart, Dominic Bufton, Tim Clipstone, Adrian Dale and Jim Cullimore, with Rusty Burns, Laurens Blok and Chris Potgeiter bringing up the rear.  

Punctures were the order of the day and a couple of spills but not even three punctures and a crash could stop Philippe Leroy and he finished in an amazing fifth place!  Both Caroline and husband Dave suffered punctures but carried on to finish.  As the race continued in the very hot sunshine Thomas was in a commanding lead chased by George and Spencer.  As cyclists dropped out from the heat and punctures, Dale, Burns, Blok, Potgeiter and Cullimore endeavored to make top ten finishes.  

Carolina Pettigrew captured the women's division followed by Dara Smith and the final finisher was Mike Masters the sole cyclist in the Grand Master category.  

The cadets raced after the adults on a short loop with the race being broken down in laps according to age groups.
