Good afternoon,
I just wanted to remind everyone of the training requirements for Red Hats. If you have a Red Hat on your unit, they can not perform ANY patient care unless they are in EMT class - this includes taking vitals. If your Red Hat is in EMT class, then they may perform patient assessments if they have already covered the assessment in class.
Additionally, if you have your Red Hat obtain vitals, they should be doing them manually. I know the LifePak is easier but they need to practice the manual skills for their class and the exam. The LifePak may be used to validate the manual vitals.
It is a good practice for ALL providers, not just Red Hats, to obtain an initial set of vitals manually. This will help keep your skills current as we may not always have the convenience of the LifePak.
If you have any questions about this, please let me know.
Thank you for your cooperation.
