Hello All,
I hope the summer has been treating all of you well. While the weather outside has been off and on, things at the track are decidedly on. We continue to have Intermediate sessions twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:00) and an Advanced session on Wednesday nights at 6:30. Last Friday we held our second Sprint tournament of the summer. 18 participants showed up, a couple straight out of their Learn to Rides, and all had a great time. In between sprint rounds we reviewed video of the sprint heats on the monitor and critiqued technique. The highlight of the night was a match between Jason and Cormack, two junior riders that had some stand out rides (you can catch their match sprint on our
Facebook page, don't forget to "Like" us). If you missed the sprints, you'll have another chance in August. On deck next is our
Time Trials set for
July 19th. Thanks to
Born Sports we've even got prizes up for grabs.
Our youth camps are fast approaching. If you haven't heard about them check out the
Summer Youth Camp page on our website. There's limited space left so if you're interested in your child attending or know of someone that would enjoy, please let them know soon.
We have a group of people headed out to attend the
GVVA's first
Trackfest this weekend. There's still time to register if you're interested, or join us for the next edition (see their
calendar for more details). We'll be meeting at the track this Wednesday at 6:00pm to discuss the details of transportation and lodging if you would like to go. This is a great opportunity to ride the Juan de Fuca velodrome prior to Provincial Championships in August.
The
Marymoor Velodrome Association (MVA) will also be hosting a series of Junior races in memory of Jeremy Storie. The first will take place this
Friday night. If you're an advanced Junior and you're not already racing, the scene down there is great!
As some of you know the
motor has been down. Thanks to everyone for their patience as we work to have the batteries replaced. Once the bike is operational again, we'll be motor pacing every other Wednesday during the Advanced sessions. Assuming it's up again before Super Week I'll even add some motor time on Friday evenings.
Speaking of Super Week, the
Giro di Burnaby race organizers are looking for
host housing for three women on
July 11th. If there's anyone that can host in Burnaby please let me know as soon as possible. We also need a few volunteers to collect crowd primes during the Giro. One of the benefits is that 10% of the proceeds we collect will go back to AYC but the real draw is that we can talk about the velodrome. I'm looking for
4 volunteers to help with this, also on July 11th. Walk around, watch the race, and chat up the track. Sounds like a great night! Please let me know as soon as possible if you can help.
For those of you that want to get more involved with the Giro, they are still looking for able bodied people to help set up and tear down barricades. I've been told that if they can get them up and down faster this year, they plan on adding a kid's race next year. It would be great to see that happen!
Have a great rest of the month and hope to see you soon!
Cheers,
Kelyn
