One thing that bothers me about handwritten fonts is that although they may look convincing, when you inevitably use two of the same letters, they are both identical. Is there a typeface out there that is designed to counteract this issue by providing a multitude of different handwritten options for each letter?

There is no handwriting font that would be reliably available in most browsers across all platforms. There are subsets like the fonts that come with Windows Vista or 7 but if you want to achieve any serious reliable coverage, it's likely that you'll have to resort to delivering the font alongside the web page - which, sadly, makes things complicated.

I suppose Comic Sans or Lucida handwriting would be some of the most widely available 'handwriting' fonts, although they're not great fonts. You might be better served by looking into some of the font embeding options, either using fancy-smancy html 5 stuff: -links.com/2009/05/28/exciting-times-html-5-web-fonts/ which won't be entirely supported, or using sIFR which is flash based: , or some combination of these solutions to reach all users.

Designed to look like traditional handwriting. The aim of Script fonts is to recreate the smooth and continuous flow from letter to letter. The natural imperfections found when using ink and a nib, like a variation in stroke weight, bouncing baselines, and ink or brush texture are some of the characteristics that will give personality to the text. Script fonts can be connected, semi-connected, or unconnected, depending on the style of the font.

Script and handwritten fonts can transform a project adding a close and personal feel to your layout. The eye catch the unpolished shapes creating an illusion to your brain which will relate to a human hand providing a craft feeling.

Then there are Cursive fonts. A style of handwriting that became popular in the 16th Century. It features characters that are joined in a flowing manner and was designed to make writing faster and to look more enjoyable. So basically a Cursive font is composed of characters joined together as if written by hand and they can be script or handwritten.
