The Troy-Bilt Horse more than lives up to its name. I used it to till my garden and get it ready for planting, very easy, just turned it to powder. Much easier than my old Troy-Bilt Pony could do it. I also did some tilling for for my neighbor. Broke new ground for them. I did it 3 inches at a time and it just chewed it up! I kept adding 3 inches until I was 12 inches down. This tiller has the weight and power to do most of the work for you. It is a large machine and is alot to handle.
The one thing I do not like is the kill switch. Each handle has a squeeze switch, only one needs to be squeezed to keep the tiller running. Hence my problem, the tiller does not need a kill switch, only a switch that stops the forward momentum and tines from spinning, like my pony has. The shifter is tight on my horse and can be difficult to get back to neutral. In neutral or reverse you do not need to hold the kill switch to keep the tiller running. The tiller has 2 forward speeds, fast and slow. That shifter needs to have 3 notches, fast, free wheel and slow, so it would be easier to find those 3 spots with that shift lever. It is very easy to start, has always started on the first pull for me. There is room for improvement with the shifting levers and the kill switch, but the Horse Tiller just chews up ground better than any tiller I have ever seen or used in 34 years of gardening.
I would recommend this Tiller to anyone who has more than 1000 sq feet of garden, or has hard clay like I do. My garden is over 2400 sq feet and hard clay so it is perfect for me. The Horse would be hard to use in a small garden even if you have hard clay. If you are tired of rototiller rodeo and being drug around by a tiller that can not dig in and do the hard work, then the Horse is for you.

5The Pride of My Gardening Fleet

When fire claimed the life of my first Horse, I had no trepidation in purchasing yet another. There are other great tillers out there like: BCS and Honda, but I prefer the Troy-Built Horse.

First, price: the Amazon price for this tiller is $1,899; that's $200 hundred cheaper than Lowes. With my Prime the tiller was shipped for free. Not in the guaranteed two-day shipping, but hell, I understand--the thing weighs three-fitty. No worries ABF!

All in all the machine is built like a Sherman tank. Sure Troy-Built has cheapened up the Horse in several areas compared to my parents' twenty-year-old Horse, but it's not a deal breaker. If you want an old one, wait at an auction for several hours and buy one or get one on Craigslist.

The Horse has 4 forward gears, 1 neutral, and 2 reverse. There are plenty of speeds to do the job you want to do.

The 305 cc Briggs is an a**-kicker. I've never powered it out to date and it usually fi res in four or less pulls. If you don't want to pull start get the Big Red. The Big Red has an electric start and brush guard. It's $500 more. I'll pull a string.

The forward-rotating Bolo tines turn the soil to dust. The Horse will make easy work of hardpan and sod. A few passes and you'll have nicely aerated soil ready to grow whatever.

The machine is very heavy, but maneuvering isn't that difficult. It's 20" wide so if you're going to use it all summer to till between rows make sure you space extra-wide. I prefer a Mantis cultivator between rows after the initial sod-busting with the Horse.

If you have a big garden the Horse is the way to go. Mine is 5,000 sq. ft plus, so the Horse or a PTO-driven tiller behind a tractor is the only way to go.

The dual levers, one on each handle, are great for walking along the side of the tiller as so you don't compact the soil that you have just tilled.

I do a lot of raised -bed gardening and purchased the hiller-furrower attachment from Troy-Built. It's basically a plow behind the tines. Works great and saves you a ton of work. I think it was around $170, but when dollars are contrasted to hoeing hills with a hoe--I'll pay the money--cause I'm lazy and love gadgetry.

One thing. Make sure if you go over the machine after it is delivered and you open her up. Mine had a few loose nuts that had to be tightened. It's not a deal breaker with me. I realize that vibrations from the transport or folks not doing a proper job assembling tillers happen. The later is an entirely different topic.

2Troy Bilt HORSE model tiller isn't so great.

Bought from Tillers Direct after consulting with them. I now feel I made the wrong choice. I should have spend the extra $500 and got the Honda FRC800AC. Shipping was fast with no problems there. I've used R&L Carriers before and they've always been "on the ball". To start out, I'm tilling a "new" garden, so the soil is compacted. And now for the tiller: the B&S engine starts and runs flawlessly, with lots of power. As for the tiller itself, the right wheel bolt fell off as soon as I removed it from the pallet. It was never tightened at the factory (note: it is a 5/16 bolt with locknut). The Tine Shield has a hinge that is spot welded the width of the shield. The spot welds are poor and breaking loose. I'll drill and bolt this remedy further problems with the shield. The Tines/PTO clutch lever does not work. The tines turn all the time whether Engaged or Disengaged. Some thing is wrong internal to the transmission. Since this is prime time tiller time in t he garden, I can live with it being engaged all the time and will address this later with Troy Bilt because I know I'll have to take it in for service and right now I need it. And the seals in the transmission leaked from the get-go. Not bad leaks, but leaks none the less. Ok, that's the mechanical issues to date. It's not like this design is new, it's been out there for decades. Yet problems like this are extremely troubling. Speaking of design: this tiller really does't dig worth a flip! I've made several passes and I'm only down about 3 to 4 inches. If you move the depth regulator up to go deeper, the unit will take off on you. I'm not sure this unit is capable of digging to 8" like it claims. I grew up with a 1960 Simplicity front tine tiller that dug like pack of moles! It would whip this HORSE hands down! My advice is that you will want to look for something else if you are serious about tilling. I can't recommend this model at all. If I could send it bac k and trade up for the Honda, I'd do it in a NY minute! That also implies that the Troy Bilt Big Red would also be crap since it's the same thing with a few additional features. Again, the B&S engine is great, runs flawlessly with great power. I'm sure the unit will till just fine once I ever get to depth and get the soil broken up. Till then, lots of pain. I hope this helps you to make your decision as to what unit you should get.
