perfect for sweet gum trees

We just bought a house that was very neglected by the previous owner. Unfortunately, there is a huge sweet gum tree in the front yard and about 5 years worth of gum balls underneath it. Raking wasn't working because the balls would just roll around. I bought the Garden Weasel Nut Gatherer today. In about 5 minutes, I was able to gather enough gum balls to fill up a 5 gallon bucket! Not even kidding. This thing works wonders.

Works great, good solid construction

This is a solidly constructed tool, with the wires of the nut roller cage fastened similar to the spikes of a bicycle wheel. Big heavy nut and bolt construction forms the cage, so the wires are easy to spread apart to empty out nuts, but don't deform easily. The unit arrived in two pieces, the handle and the cage, and it was a simple matter to insert the cage into the handle's pincers.

It works pretty well, especially on water oak acorns. Most of the acorns we have are bigger, though, so it often takes a lot of re-running over the same spot to get them. The broad surface area of the roller helps cover a lot of ground at once, but it's still only a food wide at most.

The handle is a bit shorter than I'd like and the head of the tool is actually a little too light, it'd probably work better if it h ad a bit more heft. Overall I'm pretty happy with it.

So I wasn't sure if Large Nut Gatherer meant that it was large or if it only collected large nuts. The openings between metal spokes are about 1cm +/-. It works excellent for picking up small acorns, all the way up to a rock about 2" in diameter that I happened to roll over. I was amazed at how well it collected acorns. A few swipes over a small pile and they are all in the basket. To empty it you simply spread the wires apart and they come right out. This is an excellent product. I would highly recommend this to anyone who picks up nuts.
