Few other options out there so far

Attempting to save at least seven of the majestic ash trees on our property from the emerald ash borer insect invasion that has now arrived in the county next to the one we reside. Each ash tree is neary 100" circumference. It takes nearly an entire gallon per tree. One ounce per inch. This is the second year of treatment for some trees and first year for others. The general tree condition of the trees in the second year of treatment have improved. Tree canopy is a bit thicker and color is slightly darker. I am also aware it may take up to three plus years of treatment to offer maximum protection for tree circumferences larger than 25". No study info on protection efficacy for soil drench applications for exceptionally large trees that I have found. It depends on the uptake amount and speed from the roots to the twigs which is best during the spring leafing time and mid-fall when roots are storing energy for winter. Applications are very easy to do but there is no cost savings between the gallons of regular and double strength even at the reduced rates on line compared to our local garden stores. I have seen no recommendations by any study to use the granular form of this product for protection from the EAB. Judgement is still out on the efficacy of this product against the EAB.

a superior product for certain
By jamesy
I had put down some 6ft pepper trees, 11 of them but their first spring those tender new growth started getting psyllids and it spread to them all. I trimmed the worst off and then treated the trees with the Bayer merit per label recommendation and in a couple of months the infestation was all gone. Came back a little bit the next spring but way less than before so I re-applied without trimming and its all good now.
I had some Calif Live Oaks that were getting those tan sudden oak death spots. They said not much could be done. I tried the Merit and dosed it pretty good and clipped out the spots. I also put on a mask and sprayed those spotted areas; So far so good 2 yr later! Bottom line is that its pricey but IT WORKS and those Live Oaks are old and priceless!

Green big leaves on my American Elm
By J. Dudzinski
This is my second purchase of this product. I have an American Elm that has a girth of 142 inches, so I mix the amount for that size in a FIVE gallon bucket and poured it around the trunk. My issue was that in the Spring I would get leaves, but then I would have holes in them and they would fall off, also I had yellowing of the leaves, which they would fall off too.
Since this product takes time for it to process through the system, and I applied it right after this long winter, I can see holes in the small leaves, BUT I am thinking those are the bugs that hatched while on the tree, so once they are gone...that is it.
By the way, I did notice in the Fall of last year, some holes in the leaves too, so I figure since the chemical has had time to travel, that there will be no holes this Fall. The treatment is working in that I got some beautiful large leaves...the canopy is full, but I did have a small amount of yellowing, but nothing like years past. Even a neighbor complimented on how well the tree looks.
This review covers my first application and I will do another Fall application since I ordered another container to make sure I am good to go in the Spring, because this first treatment was an emergency treatment since I did not know this product was available.
I know the cost is high, but getting a tree cut down is even higher. Looking out the window, I can see how beautiful the tree has turned out.
The directions say use a gallon of water, but if you have a huge girth, just use a bigger bucket. The chemical will do the same job as with the small amount.
