Yesterday, I took my iPad air and CCK to guitar center, and plugged in a few controllers. The lighter weight controllers worked. However, there were other controllers that gave me the alert that the device required more power than the iPad to deliver over USB.

I'm hopeful that this can be solved simply with a powered USB hub. However, here is the hard part: Google isn't much help. I find many instances of people complaining that keyboards that worked with their iPads one, two, three, four, but don't work with the iPad air.

I've got an iPad mini retina and have used a variety of USB devices via the CCK using a powered USB hub. I've also used a USB hub powered by batteries (2AA rechargeable NIMH) for powering an audio interface. The important part is making sure the USB device doesn't need drivers to work. You might need to plug and unplug the CCK to get it to be recognized by the iPad, but once that happens, I haven't had problems. Hardware I've used:
Samson Carbon 49, Korg R3, Korg Pad Kontroller, Novation Bass Station II, Yamaha Audiogram 6, and Moog Minitaur. The following didn't need a powered hub but I used one to connect multiple USB devices to the iPad: Qunexus, and Korg Nanopad.

I use the apple lightning to USB cable with a USB hub on my iPad Air, it works lovely with nearly everything I have. It definitely works with a launchpad mini, impulse 49, nocturn 25, USB midi cable, ni s2 mixer (head phone output works to) and an lpd8

Hey, perhaps a bit OT but maybe interesting none the less. Ipad 4 but may work with Air? It also maybe well known or something that only works with this set up, but if I plug my Akai MPD18 in the ipad it gets the too much power message and doesn't work, even if I plug into the CCK first. But if I plug it into my cheapo USB hub, without the hub being plugged in, the Akai works fine. No message neither. It must be plugged into the CCK first, before plugging into ipad. So no external power necessary. And it also allows me to power the Akai plus my keyboard too. Will try adding others too and seeing how far I get. Worth a try?

I use the iTrack solo (mic&guitar), cme xkeys, arturia beatstep, m-audio keystation88es, belkin hub, nimtec battery. Tesa power strips glue hub and battery to the iTrack so it's one solid pack. That pack gets strapped to a k&m stance, iPad Air holder with sidebar (love this one). A nice feature the battery can charge the iPad/ Phone which is not used for jamming. I'm still looking for suitable speakers...
