The VR series from Boston Acoustics has been on the market for quite some time now. This series introduced the VRHO Tweeter that allows higher power handling and enhanced clarity. Included with the speakers are adjustable metal carpet spikes for stability and leveling. The speaker cabinets are furniture grade vinyl, clad over MDF (If they had used wood veneer, I would've given them 5 stars, however, the price would surely have increased tremendously). In my experience this is common at the under $1000/pr. price range. What is uncommon about these speakers is the sonic clarity and depth reproduction. It's an enveloping experience listening to a set of Boston Acoustic speakers. My first notion upon sampling The Eagles - Hotel California from the Hell Freezes Over DVD was that I must have the Subwoofer turned on. So I proceeded to turn it off and to my amazement, It wasn't powered up...... hmmm..... impressive. When the dual acoustic guitar arrangement begins around one minute into the opening song, you get an appreciation for the depth, imaging and subtle reproduction of sound fron the VR2. I had auditioned these speakers in the store before purchasing so I knew they would sound good at home. I didn't know they would sound THIS good.
They are fairly hefty speakers and appear to be well made. The speaker grill is a cloth covered, criss crossed plastic material that seems well suited to protect the speakers from any inadvertant mishaps. They also use binding posts instead of cheap spring posts. Oh, and I almost forgot.... they are bi-amp and bi-wireable. That is a good sign that this is a serious speaker. It's nearly impossible to describe sound when conductive a review, but I can tell you that if you have any clue differentiating a good, high quality speaker from a poorly designed set that used cheap components, you definitely will be more than satisfied with these. They can go very loud without audible distortion and they will look nice in your room. I personally purchased these along with the CR67 set for surrounds and VRC center channel to round out my home theater speakers. In my opinion, you will still need a subwoofer to cover the frequencies below 45Hz or so. But it will still sound fantastic with passable bass extension even without the sub.
