I was looking for a pair of 6.5" In-Ceiling speakers that I can use as Surround Back Speakers to work with my existing 5.1 surround sound set-up -consisting of 5 Paradigm 6.5-inchers plus 2 Outlaw Audio LFM-1Plus subwoofers and 2 Infinity 6.5" In-wall speakers used as Height Speakers. Based on my basement theater room configuration, my options were limited to in-ceiling speakers. Retro-fitting the additional wiring and finding the right spot was a challenge (ie, frame studs serve as location limitations). With patience and hardwork (I added insulation material, as advised), I was able to install them. But, the pay-off in terms of back soundstage improvement was definitely worth the trouble. Watching the Blu-ray of "The Underworld: The Awakening" in 7.1 DTS-MA as my test/kick-off disc, transported me to audio heaven. While, I am very happy with its performance, please note that my use of the HD-R65AIM as back surround speakers were basically additional or auxiliary speakers to a 5.1 system made up of stand-alone speakers (ie, speakers with baffles). When used as such, these in-ceiling speakers with 18-degree angled-woofer and pivoting tweeter worked as designed giving me the localization and extra sound that I needed giving me a more seamless sound experience. As far as the +/- 3dB switch, I did not notice any significant improvement. Just the same, I left the woofer switch at +3dB, as advised. This product works best in a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system (ie, with sub(s) in use) for movie watching or for background music listening. For 2 channel critical listening, a pair of tower speakers with or with a sub, is still the way to go. But, as I have said, these inexpensive HD-R65AIMs were perfect for my application. Thus, the 5-star rating.
