Hey there, fellow members of the BF devteam! It's been almost two
weeks since this little group got started, so I figured it's time we
take a look at what we've done so far and what we oughta be doing
next :)

The Big News:
************
First off, Lazarus (the creator of the original BF game) and I have
been sending some emails back and forth, discussing the old project in
relation to the new project and figuring out what pieces and ideas
from the original game should be saved. Since we'll both be in Seattle
at the end of November, we're planning to meet up and talk things over
in person, but preliminarily we've agreed to try "resuming" the
original project, rather than conceiving a new project from scratch.
Basically, that would mean we are trying to create the game demoed in
the YouTube video, salvaging what we can from the original and
starting afresh.
This is all pending the group's approval, of course. If we want to
take this new version in a radically different direction, we're
welcome to do that, but I think we all very much liked what we saw of
Lazarus's original project, and I think we could really benefit from
the work already done on that initial effort. From what I understand,
most of the raw project materials have been lost at this point, but
the ideas are definitely valuable, and I'm interested to see what we
can learn from version 1.

Everything Else:
************
Since there's been no real dispute to the contrary, I think our
development platform is going to be Flash + ActionScript 3. (The other
remaining possibility is Adobe Director + 3D Lingo, which was the
combination used for the original project -- if Laz has a large
existing codebase, we might consider using it, or at least porting
portions of the code.) Quick show of hands -- among our developers,
who has experience with Flash and AS? (I have a little bit.)
Jonathan has already put together a really nice little walk cycle for
the main character, which I may or may not have running in a
background window as I write this email :) You should definitely check
out if you haven't already -- just go to the files area on the Google
Groups page (
http://groups.google.com/group/buttercup-festival-dev/
files).
Finally, I just uploaded a quick musical sketch of an "opening theme"
-- a nice little chord progression on a piano. Much like the idea of
the game world starting in black and white and gradually adding color,
I like the idea of a main musical theme that gradually fills out,
adding fuller voicing, more instrumentation, etc etc. Thus, this would
be the music for the very beginning of the game -- just a piano. Check
out "Sketch #1.mp3" in the files area.
