In October, the BUMC Change Wars raised $591.63 for treatment of the
seven most common neglected tropical diseases and cemented SPH's
dominance in matters of campus spirit.
The 2nd Annual Town Hall Meeting on November 14th, 21st Century:
Abolition in Our Time, drew nearly 100 people to hear Dr. Bales and
others share their knowledge and experience on the growing industry of
modern slavery. Attendees commented on Dr. Bales' powerful
message, and hung around afterward at the action fair to learn about
the work of local and international groups, write their congresspeople,
and sample fairly traded chocolate.
Our 3rd Cheesecake Factory Fundraiser collected $800 over two weeks. We
made a $400 contribution to both Nivasa Foundation
(www.nivasafoundation.org), which supports escaped slaves in Sri Lanka,
and the TVOS Network(http://www.eyeoftheday.org/tvos/index.html),
which helps exploited and enslaved individuals here in Massachusetts.
The World AIDS Day celebration on December 1st was a great day of
learning and reflection for the students, artists and activists who
attended. Rotaract, Global Health Initiative, andother BU groups pulled
together a phenomeonal day attended by a few hundred members of the
community throughout the day.
Along the way we also heard from BU Alumni Sera Bonds and a Boston
networking expert, harvested some green beans in Roxbury, and had a few
beers at Clery's.
I hope you all enjoyed this fall as much as I did. I look forward to
sharing the work of 2008 with you.
Best wishes,
Eva Koehler
President, BUSPH Rotaract
