maybe ...

IMHO that BB is not of GENERIC interest - but of SPECIFIC interest.

example lots of posts to the bbx and providex lists - becuase questions
will deal to 'specifics' of a SPECIFIC & particular flavor of BB

People no longer wonder 'which BB is best for what' or some such 'general'
type questions.

([ot] I favor providex+ for best implementation of graphics, utilities,
robustness & customer service - actually got Mike King to recompile the basic
some 3 times only to add some functionality I needed - and I am probably
amongst one of his smallest customers. - the time frame do get him to
implement the functionality was anywhere from 48 hours to a week).

Not everyone. There are still plenty of BBx and BBj developers out
there though they are subscribed to the Basis mail lists.

I would like to see this list stay alive if only for exceptions to the
PVX and Basis lists.

What's the Bbx list URL? I'm on the PVX one but I want to be on the Bbx as well.

There are several. They're all on Google Groups now as well.

The two main language oriented lists are:

BBx: bbx-...@googlegroups.com
BBj: bbj-de...@googlegroups.com

My preference would be to leave it open, but logically it makes sense to
shut it down. No point spending administration time on something not being
used.

Thank you for supporting the BB community all these years, Gary. I know you
(and others on this list) have helped me over the years, and I really
appreciate it.

Does anyone still program in thoroughbred basic 3gl or IDOL-IV 4gl? I had some good memories especially idol-iv.

I still have a site in Miami running original IDOL converted from MAI Basic Four. It has been running since 1982 when I picked up support of it.

I did a major RF Bar Code scanning project in 2005 in Thoroughbred and more modifications to this project in 2006.

Michel,

There is a large developer group still developing in Thoroughbred products,
Basic, OPENworkshop, T-WEB and DataSafeGuard all available with XML. Our
journaling provides for simultaneous writes to databases like SQL, Oracle
and MySQL for those that need direct access to these databases. Developers
with specific interests and questions with Thoroughbred products including
T-WEB, DataSafeGuard, OPENworkshop, Solution-IV, and T-RemoteControl and
more can continue to use the Thoroughbred Maillist Forum:
www.thoroughbredsoftware.com/b_maillistforum.php . If you want more product
detail, see our web site, www.tbred.com, or call us at 800-524-0430.

YEP! - still have a few old-time end-users who if they
move they will go to some SQL/Oracle/.NET/JAVA/PHP, etc.

I like ProvideX best from the bunch. - but must admint that I did
not look at BBx in last 3 years (as to their gui) primarily cause
it almost requires you to be a java programmer on top of a bbx programmer
to really be able to use it (or so I've heard)

That's not strictly true, Sam.  BBj implements all of the GUI functionality and syntax of BBx and Visual PRO/5.  It also supports an object-oriented syntax, and allows for integration with Java if you choose to use it.  But you can run a Visual PRO/5 GUI program in BBj without ever learning anything about object oriented syntax.

just curious as to how many "developers" there are out there IN THE US
that actually develop a package for sale using Tbred - and not
simply supporting legacy apps.

I have to agree with Jim here.  You do not need to use a single line of Java in your BBj programs to get the application to work.

After saying that, some of the extensions and advantages of using Java code in your application are very nice.

k,

just that back in 2009 --- when I was desperately seeking work, most of the
BBx developers I contacted said "how is your Java?" - when I said I had none
they weren't intersted and claimed that to use BBj "effectively" knowledge
of java would be paramount. - it doesn't "exactly" contradict what you are
saying - but seems to put a lot of "weight" non-the-less.

just a thought ....

Hi Sam ,

It won't harm stating a little over java.
I didn't know anything before, and just with some examples and little mixing
with bbx code, you start really fast, and after some time, you get use to
it, and then you preffer to you an object than a nmemonic to handle the
windows objects.

-Sergio

OSAS Software is both CHUI and GUI and BBj based but does not rely upon Object Oriented code. You can still program generic BBx without having to program specifically in BBj.

I agree with Andrew. To this point in over 3 ½ years I have not added a line of Java code to any of my programs.

Leslie

already know how to handle 'objects' using the OOP within Providex
both internal & outside active-x controls.

still - when I was looking for work in 2009 - all the BBj developers
were asking me "how is your Java" and slam-dunking me down when I
said have OOP experience - but not Java.

so ....

just going by what I heard - from at lest 2 maybe 3 developers

Comes and goes.

I mostly hang on the PVX list but I'm still interested in the developments in other bb languages.

I forgot about this list due to the lack of traffic.

Seems Gary just needs to come on once in a blue moon and stir the pot.
