The genie is an NPC that Sims can summon by cleaning an Antique Lamp[TS:LL] or rubbing the Dusty Old Lamp[TS2:FT][TS3:ST]. In the first three main games in The Sims series, a genie can grant various wishes on behalf of the Sim who summoned it, although in the first two games these wishes may turn out to have either positive or negative consequences. In Livin' Large and FreeTime, genies cannot be freed from their lamps or made playable, and regular Sims cannot become genies. In The Sims 3: Showtime, however, genies can become a playable life state, though a Sim still cannot become a genie without one of the elixirs featured in The Sims 3: Supernatural. If both Supernatural and Showtime are installed, genies will also appear as one of the life states that can be made in Create a Sim.

In The Sims: Livin' Large, the genie will give a Sim two choices for a wish upon being summoned. The player has no control over which choices are offered. These wishes will have ambiguous names such as "Air" and "Fire", which can obscure their outcomes. Wishes can go wrong, and almost always do; the genie in Livin' Large is not particularly adept.

A lamp can be cleaned once a day as long as it is on the lot. In addition, several wishes can be made in a day if each one is made from a different lamp.[n 1] The genie's ineptness is a way of balancing this.

The genie has same role as in The Sims Bustin' Out, and will return the Sim to the Bayou Twins shack if that Sim is on that quest. Otherwise, the Sim will be teleported to the Urbania Hospital. It is possible for the player to obtain the genie's lamp and teleport the Sim to a rest area containing motive-boosting objects such as a bed and a toilet.

The genie reappeared in The Sims 2: FreeTime and is found in the Dusty Old Lamp. He has violet skin and wears a waistcoat. His full name in The Sims 2 is Genie Midlock, but when hovering the cursor on him, he will simply be identified as "Genie".

To be awarded the genie, one or more Sims in the household must have high enthusiasm in a hobby and high Lifetime Aspiration, which will summon the Gypsy Matchmaker to deliver the lamp. For each Sim with a Lifetime Aspiration level of 7 or higher, there is a 2% chance (per day) that the matchmaker will bring the lamp.[n 2] The Gypsy Matchmaker may eventually deliver the lamp even if it is meant to belong to a Sim's dormmates, roommate, neighbor in the same apartment, or even a visiting Sim.

Genies also appear in The Sims 2 for Console, though nothing usually happens when Sims interact with one. Also, when a Sim awakens a genie, all that will appear is the genie's head. Genies can be untrustworthy, and will sometimes trick Sims into giving them their money.

Good results of summoning the genie could be, raised motives, a plate of food, or money. If the genie has red smoke rising from the head, it is in a bad mood and can summon fires or burglars, decrease the Sim's mood, make the Sim wet themselves, and even strip the Sim of his/her clothes for a few seconds.

The genie returns as both an NPC and a playable life state in The Sims 3: Showtime. Unlike genies in previous games, genies in Showtime can be male or female, and are mobile. Furthermore, Sims can now socialize and interact with them like regular Sims.[2][3]

Before a genie is released, they will be able to grant wishes to Sims. As in The Sims 2: FreeTime, any household member can make a wish, but unlike FreeTime, Sims can only make one wish every 12 hours, as genies need to rest for several hours after each wish.[3] Furthermore, every wish will be successful; wishes with negative outcomes no longer exist. Another difference from The Sims 2: FreeTime is that only the Sim who rubs the lamp can make a wish from the genie. To allow another Sim to make a wish, have the genie return to the lamp, and get that particular Sim to rub the lamp.

After the genie is released, it is possible to marry the genie and even try for baby with them. The children of a genie will not be able to grant wishes. However, there is a 50/50 chance that the offspring of a normal Sim and a genie will have genie abilities, which will appear when he or she reaches the child stage. While genies have an extended lifespan, this does not affect the length of any life stages prior to Young Adult.[4]

Genies only appear in one quest, The Genie Lamp, which can be completed in two ways, the Monarch way (which involves finding the lamp and getting rid of it) and the Wizard way, which involves freeing the genie. Freeing the genie from the lamp will give the wizard the combination for the "Beacon of Hope" hidden spell and a mildly-powerful staff.

In TS1, you also could not wish for whatever you wanted at will. Instead, the genie would give you a choice between two wishes. Wishes could either succeed or backfire, and the chance of a wish succeeding was only about 1 in 3 or so, so this naturally made using the genie a VERY risky proposal!

Finding a Lamp
There is a Lifetime Reward for 30,000 happiness called a Dusty Old Lamp. This is the only direct and easy way to get a magic lamp, although there are two free but very random options available to you. They can be found rarely while exploring the catacombs in any town's cemetery, or through the dimensional gate you can access by upgrading the PlasmaPunch Gyroscopic Conductor with level 10 handiness. Either way, once you have it you are ready to summon a genie and make a wish!

Wishes
A Genie can grant a variety of wishes for your Sim. After your Sim makes a wish, the genie needs about a day of rest to do it again. In between time, you can summon the genie at any time and socialize with him or her. To save you trial and error, here's a list of what each of the genie's wishes do:

After your third wish is used, the genie's lamp will remain yours to keep, which is kind of a raw deal for them if you think about it. However, Sims can go so far as to fall in love with a genie. They cannot be married or have children while still enslaved but you could technically carry your Sim's boyfriend around in her pocket and summon him when needed. It seems a female Sim should be able to get pregnant by a male genie and have a 50% chance of a genie baby being born.

Freeing a Genie
You can add a genie to your family by befriending them, then using a wish to free the genie. A short opportunity chain will come up when you select the wish, requiring you to freeze the lamp in the fridge, then heat it in the oven and finally carry it with you into the catacombs at the graveyard. Upon summoning the genie again, they will join your home.

Genie Characteristics
Genies have the same needs as a regular Sim, only a longer lifespan. Because of their magical powers, they levitate when they run and move a lot faster than a regular Sim. They come with several helpful abilities and are probably the ultimate utility Sims. They can instantly clean the entire house, or a Sim. They can also summon perfect quality food in group portions (no ambrosia, but I recommend baked angel food cake for the buff). If a Sim really gets on your nerves, a genie can Banish them, which sends them somewhere else and out of your hair. Something genies can do which can be very useful, is ensorcel Sims to do their bidding. This charm puts a 4 hour buff on a Sim and gives you temporary control. Literally, the Sim will appear as a household member for this brief time. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean they will be receptive of interactions with your Sims, but you as the player can make them do anything and have full access to their inventory.

Genie Babies
A Sim trying for a baby with a Genie would produce a 50% chance at offspring with genie powers. If you really want a genie baby, save the game before the pregnancy begins. Otherwise, you can affect the gender by using the Watermelon/Apples Trick. They cannot grant wishes but have the same powers as a freed genie.

Genie offspring can begin using their powers at the Childhood stage. It's going to be a lot easier to do chores with the clean entire house ability, and they can ensorcel a smart Sim to help them with homework! They of course have a chance to pass their powers on to later children. Thankfully, genie kids are children for the same length of time as a regular Sim. Their extra lifespan is for the adult years. Genies that die will still have their powers as genie ghosts.

Freeing the Genie is a very selfless act. It takes some work and time, and the wisher will receive no direct benefit from doing it. However, there are neighborhood-wide benefits once the genie is free, and as you'll see, it's a semi-permanent benefit. Either way, it'll definitely add some variety to your neighborhood.

Pyro goes ahead and wishes the genie free... on the third wish, of course, to maximize his gains. It's a multi-step process that begins with Pyro placing the lamp into a refrigerator. The act of freezing the lamp is a single, sustained action: he won't have to walk away. In fact, Pyro just stands there in front of the fridge waiting for it to be done, which takes about a half-hour in-game. During this time, no one can get into the fridge to eat, but hey: there are more serious issues at stake here. After that, the lamp needs to be heated, so Pyro shoves it in the oven in the same manner.

After the lamp is done baking, Pyro will need to do one more task. However, he's tired and lazy, so he thinks a nap is in order. When you're freeing the genie, pausing for other actions will not affect your progress, although you can't cancel one of the steps. So though Pyro couldn't stop baking the lamp, he's able to sleep once it's done.

This genie, named Silas Decker, is immediately added to the household. Silas has his own set of traits, wishes, and desires just like any normal Sim. He has the same six Mood meters with no special rules other than a double life expectancy. Silas here has the Athletic trait and begins his first day of freedom by jogging down to the sports stadium to join the professional sports career track.
