to Bushwick Open Studios 2010
Hi everyone
I know this is specifically a BOS group, but I just wanted to let you
all know that Steve Weintraub and I are heading up Beta Spaces 2010.
We've selected a date: Sunday November 14.
For those of you who don't know, BETA Spaces is a one-day festival of
independently curated, collaborative group exhibitions presented in a
range of alternative spaces. In 2009, BETA Spaces included more than
30 curated group shows in a ten square block area of Bushwick and East
Williamsburg, including roughly 150 individual artists.
Its much smaller than BOS, and more focused. It takes place roughly in
a triangle bordered by Bushwick Ave, Johnson Ave and Starr Street,
with some exceptions. Because its so small, we don't need tons of
volunteers or sponsors etc, but we will still need the core components
of organizing a festival.
I'm going to be managing most of it, and will continue to run press
just because it seems easier to do so, but we definitely need the
following:
Web - basically just a page on the AIB site, explaining the festival,
and a link to the submission process (which is set up through google
spreadsheets and we can just use the template from last year) and a
Seeking page.
- web listings of the shows. Does not need to be as fancy as the BOS
listings.
Graphic design - a large postcard with a map on one side and listings
of the shows on the other.
- a flyer promoting participation.
- door signs (can use last year's template)
(Laura - do you know if the web and graphic team from BOS are keen to
continue working with us? If so please put me in contact with them)
And a few volunteers to put up flyers.
Also, very importantly, we need SPACES! We are going to try our best
this year to match curators with spaces, so if you have a space, or
know anyone with a space in the designated area, please ask them if
they would be willing to host an art show for one day (or longer).
These don't have to be traditional art spaces, part of the focus of
Beta Spaces is alternative spaces - apartments, studios, alleyways,
bathrooms, hallways, gardens, parks, the streets (but get a permit
please!), coffee shops, restaurants, whatever you can think of.
If anyone wants to play a bigger role in this, we could really use a
'Space Manager' - basically someone to go around the neighborhood and
approach businesses / landlords about available spaces (starting
asap!)
Also, if you know any curators, or artists who want to curate shows,
we'll be sending out more information soon so that they can start
thinking about being involved, but basically, every show must have at
least 6 artists, and some kind of theme or thesis backing it up.
Here is a rough timeline:
Mid/Late August - send out Save the Date e-blast, and call for Spaces
and Curators.
Late August/ early September - open online submission form
Sept 13th - first informational meeting
Then meetings/mixers every 2 weeks or so
Oct 16th - registration closed (must have title, location, 2-3 line
description, and at least 4 artists confirmed)
Oct 24ish - print postcards
Nov 14th - BETA Spaces
Thanks!
Ali
