Hi team!

So registrations have been coming in, and people have also been updating our Seeking page. As usually happens (and as we expect), we have more Artists Seeking Spaces than Spaces Seeking Artists. This is not a problem! It just reminded us of something lovely . . .

Last year, we were able to put together a sort of "catch all" BOS group show, to help accommodate great artists who were unable to find a space to hang or otherwise display their work. We would love to have the same kind of thing happen again this year.

That involves people stepping up to the plate in two ways:
1. We need a space that can host this show.
2. We need someone who is willing to take on the task of curating and hanging this show.

If you are able to offer either of those things, or have feedback on this idea, please respond to the list!

Cheers,
Chloë

That sounds like a great idea. I can't think of anything for the space
at the moment, but if one is found I would be very happy to help
curate/install/generally organize it. I heard Market Hotel isn't
having events at night anymore (as of now)... maybe their space would
be available during the day? Just a thought.

3rd Ward just offered us a studio space for the weekend -- maybe we could have it there and Julia, you could be the point person for all of that?

QUESTIONS.

Ok, so we should set up a way for the overflow artists to register for
this group show. Also, we will need someone to sit at the space during
the festival, right? I won't be able to be there during that time
since we're doing a project at my space. What area of 3rd Ward was
offered, and how big is it? Is there AIB cash available for things
like hanging equipment? Hmmm...

Julia -

All great questions! I think the first thing will be to figure out
how many artists can fit in the space available, and what kind of work
can be accomodated. Then I would just email all of the relevant folks
on the Seeking page and take them on a first-come, first-served basis.
I would suggest that each artist only get a certain amount of wall
space, so that the largest possible number of individual artists can
be accomodated.

In terms of gallery-sitting - I would definitely require the artists
to take a turn gallery-sitting as a condition for being in the show.
If there are 10 people, that would be like 2 hours each, which seems
totally reasonable.

Chloe knows more about the available space than I do, so hopefully she
can follow up on that part... I'm also looking into whether this show
might happen at BFP, since the gallery there is big and has more
usable walls than most of the studios at 3rd Ward. Will let you know
on that shortly one way or another...

I would support AIB fronting the bill for hanging supplies and such,
shouldn't be more than $50 or so anyway, right?

Thank you for taking this on, I think it'll be a great resources for
folks who don't currently have space. You rock!!! :)

I will be getting supplies to hang the benefit show so you can take whatever is leftover.

Awesome, Laura, thanks for the tips. You guys should let me know as
soon as you decide on 3rd Ward vs. BFP... I can then write up an email
with the below details/conditions and send it out to the artists on
the seeking page. 10ish artists sounds great, and yes, hanging
supplies should be pretty cheap -- we just need to make sure we have
them left over from the benefit, or I can buy them if AIB can fund it.
Finally, I need to round up at least one or two people to help me
install the show... would anybody be available for that? I suppose I
could also ask some participating artists.

See you Monday hopefully!

Thanks,

-Julia

Having an "overflow" show is great!!
Hmmm . . . . although if it is truly for "overflow" artists wouldn't
it be best to wait several weeks before soliciting artists for it?

There are curators (myself included) that have not posted their
exhibit opportunity on the Seeking Artists page (because don't have
time to handle the influx of e-mail it would generate) but are very
actively contacting artists that are listed on the page. If something
like this is offered prematurely, artists may commit to this or "jump
ship" and then not be available for the exhibits that independent
curators, alternative spaces, artists are working hard to put
together. Since registration just started, perhaps give curators,
artists, etc. a little time to make their connections.

That said, it is a totally great idea to have an venue for
overflow! . . .

That is a good point - we won't be able to publicize immediately
anyway because we don't have the space locked down yet, but I do want
to give the artists in the "overflow" show the opportunity to register
themselves for individual inclusion in the program if they want, and
waiting more than a few days would make that impossible. I also would
love to give them the opportunity to be in the benefit, and the
deadline for submissions there is May 10th.

However, if we don't think it's important for the artists to have the
opportunity to be listed individually in the print program, it's
probably fine to wait... what do people think?

Will do! We also just got email from another place offering a LARGE
space, which could probably accomodate all overflow people but is in a
less than ideal location. Am also following up on that and will see
where it leads...

I agree, that is a good point. We should wait as long as possible to
give independent curators a good chance to include artists from the
"seeking space" page in focused exhibitions.

Laura -- if we do do an overflow show, especially if the artists
aren't published in the print program because of the timing, would it
be that good of an idea to have the show in "a less than ideal
location?" I think we should stick with something central (ex. 3rd
Ward) that people would be more likely to stop by, for they will be
given no detailed description of what or who they are going to see --
even if it is a compromise on space. See what you think after all the
options are in...

Heya, all (and especially Julia) -

So, we have confirmed location for the "catch-all" show - we went to
visit an AMAZING new space, up by ISCP center (on Morgan just north of
Metropolitan). It's an art supply business called TALAS that sells
paper, bookbinding supplies, etc - they have a whole industrial
building, with warehouse, showroom, etc. The top floor, cut up into
several large studios, is basically vacant. They have offered us two
huge studios (several thousand square feet of space in total) for the
show, which would include whoever we want plus some of their
employees' work, and maybe a section of tables for displaying
bookbiding/book arts.

Also, the contact person there (Jill Salik) is psyched to collaborate
on curating, hanging, managing the space, delivery and pickup of work,
etc. She's really cool and super motivated about this project, so
should be a great co-leader. :)

Julia - hope this all sounds good to you! If yes, let's confirm with
them ASAP and get you in to check out the space and meet with Jill!

Laura,

How exciting!!! I'm down with everything -- I suppose I should meet
with Jill as soon as possible. Let me know how I can go down there to
check it out. I'm not clear on when we will be "catching" our overflow
artists though -- I suppose we can contact people from the seeking
page after a certain date? And perhaps put out a request in an email
blast? Sorry I didn't make the meeting to talk to you about this; I'm
way under the weather this week.

This sounds like a great installation opportunity... So, I'm curious:
I work with a collective of artists called Urban Studio that is
partially associated with my school, partially external. Some of the
people actually live in Bushwick, but as a group they've worked on a
lot of public installations (including with the Department of Transit,
and at Art Basel Miami). I was wondering if I could give them a shout
about this space, and we could put together a piece for the show
there? If it's huge enough for everyone in overflow to be including,
you know?

Let me know your thoughts.

Julia -

Awesome!!! I'll send a separate email intro to you and Jill, and you
guys can take it from there... I'm sure she'll be up for meeitng with
you to check out the space ASAP.

In terms of figuring out who to put in the show - I'd say contact
everyone on the Seeking page starting early next week? We can also
put a call out on the mailing list. I'm sure you'll have MORE than
enough work. ;)

And, on that note - ABSOLUTELY you should put your own work in, or
this Urban Studio group project, into the show if you want to. If
you're coordinating the show, the least you can do it put your friends
in it too... ;> I know Jill has some folks that she wants to put in
the show too, including TALAS employees - I say, the more the merrier!

We need a name for the overflow show. Any ideas, everyone?

See you tomorrow at the meeting!

"The Open"?  Or the "U.S. Open," if we want to really go for swagger?

Hey everyone!

Submissions keep rolling in for "Seeking Space," and I hope we can
make it the best show it can possibly be to give a diverse group of
local artists some excellent exposure. A few key issues have come to
mind recently.

1] Is there anyone who can assist with lighting/equipment?

2] We need hanging equipment. I think we have access to various hooks
etc from Talas and my frame shop, but it looks like there will be
*many* diverse works to hang, so I was wondering if we can get some
assistance in acquiring some equipment.

3] A handful of artists are interested in displaying video work. Would
anyone have access to a easily mountable projector or screen?

4] I was thinking we should have something for people to nibble/sip on
during the event. Salsa and...?

5] We need two volunteers for June 3rd to help us install the work.

Basically, it would be amazing if anyone and everyone could give us
your thoughts on acquiring the above resource, which I feel would make
"Seeking Space" an excellent, well put together event. I understand
that we may not be able to get every detail covered... just let me
know what you all think!
