Heya, guys!  Just realized I hadn't emailed anything to the group about this... I'm hoping to administer a couple of surveys during and immediately after BOS, one for participating artists and one for attendees.  The information from the surveys would be used for program evaluation (how are we doing, how could we do better next year, how are people navigating or using the festival), to be able to say something about the festival and the Bushwick arts community for press and advocacy purposes, and, I hope, for more in-depth research that I am planning to write up about broader issues of the arts and arts communities in the context of urban sociology.

I'm thinking that the attendee survey would be quite short, and would be something people could pick up and drop off at the hubs (or mail back).  The participating artist survey would probably be done shortly after the festival using survey monkey.  I might also want to use some of the registration data for this research if people are OK with it - I would definitely offer all registrants an opt-out if we do this.  Of course all participation would be totally voluntary, and it wouldn't mean more work for anyone but me.  ;)

Any major objections to this idea?

I have no major objections, and it sounds interesting . . . could you give an idea of some of the sample questions you might be asking? Are they just general feedback on the event itself, or more about demographics and/or neighborhood knowledge?

Also, you know more about this than I do, but I seriously doubt anyone will mail back a survey after the fact. It would be great if the attendee surveys were available at the hubs (which would be more work for hub staff/volunteers, because they'd have to keep track of all of them, and also encourage people to fill them out, which would probably mean answering people's questions about the surveys while they're completing the surveys, which means training hub staff/volunteers to be able to answer said questions), but could they also go out as a SurveyMonkey link through our mailing list after the fact?

Those are my first thoughts!

I agree with Chloe -- I think it's a great idea, but no one will mail in anything. Collecting them on the spot, or survey monkey (although I'm not sure how we find the attendees after the fact) seems the best way to go. I think as long as we let folks know what we are doing, and allow them to opt out there is no reason not to use the registration data.

From urban sociology point of view - would be good to have it in
Spanish and ask questions that clarify the demographics of who is
visiting BOS to see if local long-standing community is getting
involved (since that is part of AIB mission).

I agree that sending won't work. I think the participating artists and
venues may do so but not attendees.

What about a stack of printed cards given to each venue with questions
on one side and non-profit postage on other so it can go right into
mailbox? Or no postage, but have boxes of collection at more than just
the hubs.

An idea -
I know there's a lot of artists and venues but maybe another way to
approach it in future is to create a brief questionaire or something
in advance that goes to all the venues & artists upon registration.
They print it out and attendees fill it out when they visit their
venue. It could have the same number as their map number (for
identification) . . . or if the map numbers aren't ready at that
point (probably wouldn't be) maybe registration could have a final
online confirmation step wherein everyone is urged to check the
program listing for accuracy & when they click on a confirm button,
the survey is forwarded to them for printing. There could be some kind
of benefit given for handing them back in.

Regards to all, Daryl-Ann
