Subject: Presentation topic

We get a debate topic next week. We have to meet up a few times before then because Steve said since we did well on the first two, if we throw this one he will deduct marks for our presentation marks, according to his logic. Our chosen topic is to argue that advertising to children is unethical.

After todays meeting I will need you guys to have arguments from both sides so we can prepare for counter arguments that we may potentially need. Research/stats/expert opinion will do. The more prepared we are the more solid evidences we can use during the rebuttal.

Diane can you set up a doodle for us to meet either this sat or sun so we can put our arguments together. Participation to this project and 1-2 arguments of each side are mandatory to get your next weeks evaluation marks.

Cheers

Lindsay

My notes since I have to leave at 2:

Point-advertising to children to unethical:

-influences children to incorporate materialistic values; children must rely on pester power to get parents to pay for them and if they cannot get it, it leaves the children feeling frustrated and inadequate when compared with other children who are able to get it

-children do not have the cognitive ability to distinguish advertising from actual programming: ads targeting children are misleading and unfair

-brain washes children into becoming eager consumers and capitalists

-many ads targeted towards children are about unhealthy food; children are more gullible and as they get influenced to eat/buy unhealthy food, it causes social implications and obesity; can lead to increased medical care in the future: ruin their lives!

Kelly

here is my point

Children tend to make incongruities as they receive and interpret the advertisements. It shows that advertisements possibly inculcate children with radical ideas. ex) 27% of children made a false interpretation to understand the message of the advertisement.

regards,
Ethan
