You can do either idea 1 or 3, just make sure you have enough information if you narrow down from North America to either US or Canada.

Oh, btw - in case there's any confusion: we are doing topic 1:

- Smartphone industry in North America

(you can include mobile phones in general in your research / writeup; if we find better sources that discuss mobile phones in general, we can do that instead. There are some nice angles to focus on like the transition of old cell phone users to smartphones - e.g. what % of cell phone users are using smartphones, production trends for old cell phones etc)
