Courage the Cowardly Dog is an American animated television series created and directed by John R. Dilworth. The pilot episode, "The Chicken from Outer Space", originally aired as part of What a Cartoon! on February 18, 1996. The series officially premiered on Cartoon Network on November 12, 1999, and ended on November 22, 2002, with a total of 52 episodes over the course of four seasons. A CGI special titled "The Fog of Courage" was broadcast on Cartoon Network in Southeast Asia on October 31, 2014. The series is about an anthropomorphic dog named Courage, who lives with an elderly couple in Nowhere, Kansas. In each episode, the trio are thrown into bizarre and frequently disturbing misadventures, often involving the paranormal or supernatural.
Dilworth pitched the series to Hanna-Barbera's animated shorts showcase What a Cartoon! and a pilot titled "The Chicken from Outer Space" aired on Cartoon Network on February 18, 1996.[2] The segment was nominated for an Academy Award, but lost to the Wallace and Gromit short film A Close Shave. The short was greenlit to become a series, which premiered on November 12, 1999, and ended on November 22, 2002, with 4 seasons each consisting of 13 episodes. It was nominated for three Golden Reel Awards and won one Annie Award.

Courage the Cowardly Dog originally was premiered as a short on February 18, 1996. The show premiered on November 12, 1999, and became the highest-rated premiere in Cartoon Network history at the time.[13] It ended on November 22, 2002, with 52 episodes produced in four seasons.
Jeff Swindoll of Monsters and Critics reviewed the first season DVD and praised all the episodes featured in the first season and encouraged fans to buy the season's DVD, but also noted the exclusion of the original Hanna-Barbera short The Chicken from Outer Space on the DVD.[18] In 2023, Indian Entertainment Journal Pinkvilla ranked the show no. 1 of their list of top 10 1990s Cartoons and gave special praise to the critically acclaimed Season 2 episode "Courage in the Big Stinkin' City" and stated that the show remains enjoyable till present times.[19]
Courage the Cowardly Dog: Season One, a two-disc DVD set featuring all 13 episodes from the show's first season, was released in Australia (Region 4) on September 12, 2007, by Madman Entertainment.[22][23] On January 13, 2010, the complete second season was also released, which as of 2023 is the only DVD release of "The Chicken from Outer Space".[22][24]
A Region 1 release of the first season was done by Warner Home Video (via Warner Archive) on July 20, 2010. The release is the second in an official release of several Cartoon Cartoons on DVD, under the "Cartoon Network Hall of Fame" name.[25] The second season was released on October 14, 2014, as the fourth in the "Hall of Fame" series.[26] The third season was originally supposed to be released on DVD in Region 1 on February 2, 2016,[27] but it was delayed to (and was released on) March 22, 2016.[28] It is the fifth title in the Cartoon Network Hall of Fame series. The fourth and final season was released on September 27, 2016. Courage is one of the few Cartoon Network shows to be available in its entirety on DVD.
In addition, all four seasons of the series are available for download on iTunes.[29][30][31][32] The PlayStation 2 version of the video game Cartoon Network Racing contains the episodes "Robot Randy" and "The Magic Tree of Nowhere" as unlockable extras.
Courage the Cowardly Dog is a cartoon about a lovable but easily frightened dog, though one who I would argue is not cowardly at all because even when he's scared he still steps up and does what he must to save his family. Then penultimate episode of the show "Remembrance of Courage Past" shows his origin and from there his life was filled with horror and suffering, but despite this Courage felt an unwavering loyalty to his owner Muriel and even her mean grumpy husband Eustace and always did what he could to protect them no matter how scared he got.
One of the most frightening cartoons in Cartoon Network history, at least for its main protagonist, is Courage the Cowardly Dog. The scariest Courage the Cowardly Dog episodes take the always frightened dog and put him in situations that even his clueless owners, Muriel and Eustace, never see coming until it is typically too late. There are a lot of things throughout all four seasons of Courage the Cowardly Dog that unsettle adult viewers just as much as younger ones, from the floating head in "The House of Discontent" or the terrifying Freaky Fred, who actually had an episode named after him. The show was also a huge critical success for Comedy Central, even picking up an Academy Award nomination for the episode, "The Chicken from Outer Space," in the Best Animated Short category. From the terrifying situations that scare Courage the Cowardly Dog to the moments that even put fear into Muriel and Eustace, the cartoon has some of the scariest moments in any cartoon made for kids.
Some of the scariest Courage the Cowardly Dog episodes rely on body horror. The second half of the final episode of the first season of Courage, "The Great Fusilli," sees an eponymous traveling performer arrive in Nowhere who has the mysterious power to turn those who act in his shows into puppets. Fusilli conscripts Eustace and Muriel into his performance, successfully transforming them. In the end, Fusilli himself is turned into a puppet, and Courage rescues Eustace and Muriel. However, things end on a grim note, as, unable to return them to their natural states, Courage must puppeteer his adoptive family in order to feign a normal life.
Released in 2002, season 4's "Perfect" was the final episode of the Courage the Cowardly Dog series. In it, Courage is berated by an elderly school teacher for his supposed failures, which leads to the poor pup enduring a series of vivid and particularly terrifying nightmares. During these nightmare sequences, Courage envisions a warped, blue being fans dubbed the "Bugle Monster" who whispers the phrase "You're not perfect." The unsettling voice and uncanny CG, along with the creature's abrupt appearance, make for one of the most uncomfortable and unsettling sequences in any animated series. The fact it represents Courage's self-doubt makes it even scarier.
The image of a floating human-like head permeated many children's dreams because of this season 2 episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog episode. In "The House of Discontent," the farmland where the Bagge family resides has been bare for a long time, unable to grow crops. The Spirit of the Harvest Moon (Fred Melamed) appears, demanding the family leave. In the basement appears a giant white floating head with black eye sockets and a black mouth. The demonic spirit threatens the Bagge family in a dark and rough voice, and the live-action head clashes with the animated background in an eerie and purposefully unnatural way.
The first season of Courage the Cowardly Dog featured some of the series' most memorable frights, and the titular monster from the "Queen of the Black Puddle" episode certainly stands out. After a thunderstorm, Courage discovers a strange entity lurking in the puddles outside the Bagge home. After the Black Puddle Queen entrances and captures Eustace, Courage is forced to swim into the Queen's underwater domain and rescue him.
Courage the Cowardly Dog season 5 is an upcoming series of and it contain a lot of episodes. In season 5, Eustace is now completely reformed and will never call him a stupid dog. This is the final season of the series until Season 6 in 2020.
Abandoned as a pup when his parents were sent to space by a crazed veterinarian, Courage was found and adopted by the kind-hearted Muriel, who lives in the middle of Nowhere with her grumpy and greedy husband, Eustace Bagge. But creepy stuff happens in Nowhere, and it always seems to find its way to Courage and his new home. But no matter what, Courage will always push past his otherwise cowardly nature to rescue the owner he loves so much... and Eustace, too.
An anthropomorphic cockroach who invites the Bagge family to a dusty hotel room in New York City, where just on the wall is a mousehole-sized door that has something in there that is never directly known, as all that's left of its victims are bones. Shwick is also a wanted criminal, and to hide his tracks he hires Courage to deliver a present to a scary apartment with rooms full of horrible things (one including a certain Violin Girl).
- Berserk Button: Calling him "Bushwick" sets him off. He prefers to be called "Shwick". Just "Shwick".
- Big Creepy-Crawlies: He is an anthropomorphic cockroach.
- Brooklyn Rage: From the real world Brooklyn neighborhood Bushwick. You can call that Bushwick, but not him.
- The Cameo: He makes a voice-only cameo at the end of "Ball of Revenge," complaining that he didn't get to be part of the Legion of Doom.
- The Comically Serious: A large part of his appeal is that he is always speaking in a conspicuous and sinister tone even while participating in a hair-length contest with Eustace or changing a danger sign with a skull to a not be afraid one with a smiling face.
- Creepy Cockroach: One that's as big as a human.
- Do Not Call Me "Paul": Not "Bushwick". "Shwick". Just "Shwick".
- Early-Bird Cameo: He doesn't appear until season two, but is one of the monsters and villains seen in the show's opening in the first season.
- Fat Bastard: Fat and very, very much a crook. Well, for as fat as a cockroach can be.
- Furry Reminder: At one point, we can see him meticulously cleaning his antennae like an actual cockroach.
- Goofy Print Underwear: Amusingly wears boxers beneath his gross cockroach skin. And he is very proud of them.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: It doesn't take much for his rough and violent temper to be seen. Just a broken squeegee and he immediately declares war on Courage and somehow comes to the conclusion of being double-crossed, when a whole freaking train broke into his apartment.
- Nothing Is Scarier: "Ya see dese bones? Ya wanna know what made dese bones? Ya don't wanna know what made dese bones."
- Obviously Evil: The funniest thing about him is that he couldn't look more guilty if he tried. He is a giant cockroach with a shifty demeanor who lurks in a dark alley and only Courage is even close to suspicious.
- Serial Killer: Whatever's living in that mousehole, Shwick's clearly fed a lot of people to it.
