Training Indonesia`s Young Leaders: Muslim Intellectuals as Agents of
Change

The Indonesian Young Leaders programme is a continuation of the
intensive cooperation between the Indonesian Ministry of Religious
Affairs and Leiden University, which started in 1985 with INIS,
Indonesian-Netherlands Cooperation in Islamic Studies. The Indonesian
Young Leaders Programme is similar to the INIS programme as it also
offers training and research facilities in Leiden and at other Dutch
Universities.

The Indonesian Young Leaders Programme is a scholarship programme -
from 2006 until 2011 - which strives to enhance Indonesia`s future
leadership through the internationalisation of Islamic Higher education
in Indonesia. The programme consist of two strongly linked and mutually
reinforcing instruments: 1) International Conferences and 2) Education
and training (Upgrading courses, MA and PhD).


MA

In sum, 30 MA fellowships will be made available and allotted to the
Islamic Studies programme in Leiden. The students will study in Leiden
for the period of 18 months: 12 months for taking classes and 6 months
for writing a thesis.

The focus of this MA programme is on research methodology and consists
of both classical disciplines and social sciences. It aims to equip
students with a critical attitude and the necessary intellectual
instruments to analyse societal and religious issues.

The application deadline for the first ten scholarships is 15 October
2006. After selection a two-month English pre-departure training will
be given in Jakarta. The MA programme in Leiden will start in February
2007.

Requirements for the MA programme

To be eligible for the Indonesian Young Leaders MA programme, the
candidate must meet the following requirements:

* be an Indonesian national
* have a S1 degree from either a state sponsored or non-sate
sponsored Islamic Indonesian University
* have a background is Islamic Studies
* willing to take part in the programme fulltime for the complete
duration of the programme, 18 months
* have a high level of English proficiency (TOEFL 550, after
pre-departure training)
* be in good health
* not be above the age of 40 years (men) or 45 years (women) on the
application deadline

Procedure

Please submit the following documents in threefold by 15 October 2006,
15 March 2007 or 15 March 2008 at the latest:

* Motivation Statement
* Curriculum vitae
* Proposal for your MA thesis (500 words)
* A copy of your KTP
* A copy of your passport
* A legalized copy of your birth certificate
* Two recent photographs (3x4; color)
* A certified true copy of your S1 diploma
* A copy of the original of your statements of grades and a
translated transcript
* Two letters of recommendation

Leiden University will create a short-list of students, who will be
interviewed by NEC (Netherlands Education Centre). The selection
committee will decide upon the final selection for the fellowships.

PhD

In sum, 15 PhD scholarships will be made available for Indonesian
students to undertake a four year long PhD programme at a Dutch
university: 8 within the realm of Islamic Studies, 7 within other
disciplines. Applicants should have an MA relevant to the proposed
topic for the PhD research. The application deadline is yet to be
announced.
