Subject: DRAFT Bike Cage Volunteer Card, Manual, etc..!
To: oriolesbikecage <Orioles...@googlegroups.com>

Hi Bike Cage Folks (and Susanne, Shona, Macho, Matt, Lizanne, Rob, Benita and Leigh Anne - bcc'd),

I am so excited about this!  This was very fun to make and I hope it will be as fun to use.

See the following for your comments, criticisms and improvements:

Package would include:
(Laminated, card stock, 2.5" X 3", text to be customized if/as desired: "Bike Garage", "Bike Dump", "Bike Cupboard, etc.. )

(8.5" X 11" folded and stapled booklet, card stock matte colour cover, BW regular weight paper inside)

Frame Stickers set
not included (based on icons on card).

Purpose:
  • To encourage a sense of accomplishment and skills building amongst drop-in volunteers.
  • To increase the level of skill, repair techniques, knowledge base.
  • To encourage the sharing of knowledge between people of every skill level.
  • To encourage cooperation, integration and volunteer sharing with all of the community bikeshops.
  • To increase community access to each community bikeshop.
  • To encourage long life of the tools esp. specialty tools by ensuring proper usage.
  • To integrate simple riding skills / locking skills development into the community bikeshop learning process.

Design Goal:
  • To design a card that would appeal/be used to all ages, esp. ages 10-15.
  • Emulate a video game manual / bikeshop catalogue.
  • To supplement person to person learning, not replace it.
  • To be visually arresting, not dumbed down, but easily read.
Usage:
  • The general idea would be to get EVERYONE at all the community bikeshops a card like this, not just the kids. Those with all of the skills will have all of the "levels" stamped, and would be the primary teachers at first.
  • The levels were designed to be very attainable, to ensure that kids start getting stamps right away.
  • The idea of the Pro card, not yet designed, would be to move to the next level - - the trickier stuff.
  • The idea is that people with Keeper of the Keys - Pro, Level III cards (not yet drafted) would be full-fledged members of the collective, know all of the rules in the Bike Cage handbook (drafted by Murray), be able to show their card to the community centre and use the bikeshop at any time. Of course, with the understanding that they are then responsible for telling anyone else how long they plan on being there, and sharing knowledge when possible.
  • The purpose of the stickers is to give kids a way of tracking their progress and accomplishments without having to carry their cards with them (we'd likely keep them for them.
  • I'd also like to get a custom hole punch for each community bike shop that can't be replicated - - kind of the Holy Grail" of bikeshop learning. So that kids/everyone come to respect the idea of "getting a new stamp".  Anyone know where to get a custom hole punch, preferably with a die in the shape of a bicycle?
Please circulate these to other community bikeshop folks for their comments.

I will ask some colleagues with B.A.s in education, and experience teaching kids for their opinion as well.

I would like to set a print deadline of the day before our Bike Rodeo.
Please send any comments a.s.a.p. so that they can be integrated.

Thanks!
Anders
