Hey y’all,
My name is Matt, and I’m the Director of
Fly Ranch. I wanted to invite y’all to Burning Man’s 2023
Sustainability Update Call. It’s July 21st from 11 AM- 12:30 PM PDT. We’ll host a Zoom and
Facebook Live and hear from sustainability project leaders, BRC art, mutant vehicle, and theme camp leads, the Washoe County Sustainability Manager, Kooyooe Pa’a Guides Founder Autumn Harry, and Burning Man's CEO.
More broadly, I wanted to invite y’all to write about the
2030 Sustainability Roadmap. The roadmap has been widely distributed, cited, and implemented at BRC and increasingly in the global Burning Man. The Roadmap has been covered
in the NYT, a click-bait piece in
Wired, and in a recent
podcast with Burning Man’s CEO (jump to 20:24). Five
academic articles and
two books have cited it. Citing the Roadmap, a 2021
article in the William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review concluded:
Burning Man is arguably the most environmentally conscious festival in the United States, albeit not strictly a music festival.
We’ve made incredible
progress towards our goals. Yet there is still much we haven’t planned or implemented from ecological, philosophical, scientific, and technological standpoints. I think we still have areas to build a comprehensive approach, especially around environmental justice and
climate change adaptation. I wanted to invite y’all to join the call, and if you feel inclined participate. I am happy to brainstorm, read papers and offer suggestions, publish together, or support as I can.
Y’all are welcome to attend one of our
Friends & Family Campouts at Fly. You can read about a Burners Without Borders Summit in
this post by Joseph Miller, Indigenous Community Relations Coordinator at Friends of the Inyo. You can read about one of the most compelling events at Fly Ranch in Yodassa Willian’s
post on a writing retreat for women and non-binary writers of color.
All the best,
