This should be a really interesting discussion of graywater, and is in direct response to the recent effort to pass an ordinance requiring permits for single residence graywater systems in SF.

“We can obtain real water from a Virtual River of water efficiency, trimming
water waste, recycling wastewater, and capturing rainwater in urban areas
before it flows into storm drains. There's more water available from these
sources than we've ever exported from the Delta.”  (Doug Obegi)

Dear Greywater Professionals,

ADPSR (Architects Designers Planners for Social Responsibility) was so inspired by your dedication to making recycled water available to the masses that we’re holding a symposium on residential/ commercial greywater system design. I was particularly moved by Art Ludwig’s call to action that averted a new restrictive SF ordinance.

In addition to system design and model ordinances for more complex greywater systems (w/ Roger Rushing from the City of Berkeley building department), we’ll be discussing the emerging fascination by architects in the idea of vertical / urban agriculture. How could local food production occur in high density urban environments as we climb towards ever higher requirements for max. energy efficiency and less reliance on far away food and water resources.

This will be held at the architect’s building in San Francisco on Nov 17 – 130 Sutter Street/ 6:00PM – 8:00PM.

Greywater for a Parched Planet:

Quenching California’s Thirst for lush landscapes and local food production

November 17, 2009   6:00 pm Reception; 6:30 pm Lecture
AIA San Francisco
130 Sutter Street, Suite 600

As the water crisis drags on, greywater has jumped into the fray as California’s most reliable non-potable water source. And thanks to the recent ruling on August 4th, by the California Building Standards Commission (CBSC), it is now affordable for residential customers to install single fixture, ‘laundry to landscape’ greywater systems - no permit required. But the brouhaha over permitting is still raging. Many counties are still requiring expensive perk tests for even the simplest of systems.

Please join us for a lively discussion on model greywater ordinances, and the latest thinking in ecological landscapes, including furturistic schemes for vertical farming in high density residential developments.
