Hi all,

The Burmilla ZA project is slowly but surely going forward.

CASA made the decision to only classify those cats with the dominant inhibitor gene as Burmilla. The Non-inhibitor cats are registered as Asian.

When the recessive Longhair gene pops out, these cats are classified as Longhair Burmilla (not Tiffany) and Longhair Asian.

So, in the Burmilla ZA program, we can out-cross with:
  1. Burmilla
  2. Burmese
  3. Asian
  4. Original Longhair Silver varieties (aka known as Chinchilla LH)
  5. Persian Chinchilla (which at this stage we avoid).
This year we potentially will get to  F4 fenotype Burmillas.

Thanks Alida

Just one addition - a Burmilla must have the dominant Inhibitor gene and the dominant Agouti gene.  So, a Burmilla is always a Silver (Inhibitor + Tabby).   A black smoke, for example would be an Asian, not a Burmilla.

PS  We have not discussed the "golden Burmilla" option, which is also theoretically possible.   I imagine that this should also be called an Asian, rather than Burmilla.

Hi Rhona,

Johan Lamprecht must check on me. But my understanding is:

Cherie-Finesse Adair Black Paw is a F1 Burmilla SH. (SH = Shorthair; LH = Longhair)
  • She carries one SH gene (dominant), one LH gene. Therefore: she is SH.
  • She carries one Colour Inhibitor gene (dominant), one other colour from her mom  (a Brown Tortieshell)
  • She carries one Agouti gene (dominant), one non-Agouti gene. Therefore, as F1, you see tabby markings.
Cherie-Sheldon Hercules is a F2 Burmilla LH.
  • He carries two LH genes.
  • He carries at least one Colour Inhibitor gene (dominant), maybe two. You will find that out later in the line.
  • He carries at least one Agouti gene (dominant), maybe two.
Therefore (if I am right):
But it is probably better to just wait and see.

Regards,

Alida Delport
