I had the same C31:23 problem with some more side effects like picture was mosaiced, no sound, sometimes the stripe in the tape was creased. So I had the mood to punch it really hard and I did it and now the camera works perfectly!
Sony trv-950 wouldn't playback this weekend. The camera was left overnight inside a vehicle and temps got down below
freezing. Knew I should warm unit up gradually before use. Would not playback at all from a tape that I knew had video recorded.Rewound tape & played with it for a while & picture appeared but was pixelated with grey horizonatal stripes.
Got home.... same thing. Used cleaning tape & cleaned tape head with alcohol... same problem. Just did what other users said to do..... remove battery for a couple of minutes & give it
a good "wack" an I'll be damned..... no more grey stripes & no error code! Thanks!
Thank you all so much for the good advice and the highly visual descriptions. Ahmed's approach is the one that worked for us - Thank you once more to Ahmed! The roller he pictured had indeed fallen out of our BT120 and we would not even have noticed it if his photos hadn't prompted us to look at the mechanism and then search for what appeared to be missing. We put it back in with a tweezer and are up and running.
LOOK NO FURTHER BECAUSE THIS IS THE REAL FIX. It was from our FRIEND from IRAQ. It was mentioned above with the pictures. Scroll up to Tues, January 9 and you will see AHMED JASIMs exerpt with 3 pictures. He's the one that got it right. NOW I'M WILLING TO BET THAT ALL OF YOU THAT HAVE THIS PROBLEM, have NO LOCK in your rubber roller. NOT SURE? Just look at the rubber roller wheel inside your camera (as seen in his pic) and lift up SLIGHTLY on it with your finger (if you can) or with something very thin like an eyeglass repair screwdriver, needle, coffee stirrer or such. DOES IT MOVE UP? IF SO, you lost your lock and/or it has broken off and it is causing your wheel to ride up during recording or playback thus causing the camera to produce the code. SMACKING it just TEMPORARILY puts it back into its normal position again. However it WILL happen again if the lock is not replaced. Thanks AHMED for taking the time to find the LOGICAL solution to the problem. You just saved me a half day's work. SO STOP SMACKING and GET THE PROBLEM SOLVED FOR GOOD!
Hi Debbie
Thanks a million for your C31 thread. You have just saved me a labour charge of 60 UK sterling plus parts. I agree with others who say it must be a Sony scam. But I would not change my TRV11E for the world... such good picture quality. Thanks again.
I followed the Jan 09, 2007, comment and found the black roller jammed at the bottom of where you insert the tape. It took some time to find it, but apparently "fell off." After dislodging it with a crochet hook I put it back on where it showed in the picture and the camera is working fine with no C:31:23 code flashing. Thanks for the picture, Ahmed. I couldn't have done it without it.
I have a DCR-TRV140, with this problem, I saw the pictures of the black rubber roller that came off so I took a look inside and sure enough it had fallen off completely. I'm assuming that the 'white lock' keeps this roller in place but its no where to be found in my cam. Should I take the body off the cam and hope it falls out or just find something else to hold it, assuming that it does.
I let my finger off the reverse button and the picture froze, no motion to the video at all. Then after 2-3 seconds the error code popped up again. After a few more tries and some more experimentation I come to realize that it is working now okay as long as it isn't trying to advance the tape. Whenever I go to advance the tape, whether by playing it or by pushing fast forward, the tape won't advance and I get the error code.
I have what is probably a related problem on a TRV18E. Image is perfect on screen or viewfinder direct from lens. No error codes but left hand (about15%-20%) of picture is blank, just a vertical grey bar with pixellated edge on replay. There is a trace of pixellation in two other places across the image and image pixellates a bit with movement in image. This is on replay of known good tapes and on record. Confirmed by swapping tapes with my VX1000E.
Used long nosed pliers and gently replaced black roller onto the thin spindle as depicted in your picture sequence. That may well have saved me a small fortune. Obviously the C32.23 flashing has stopped and the camera is now fully operational again. This is a brilliant site for information of this type.
