Immune systems generate diverse alarm signals in response to invading pathogens. In a recent Nature paper, Leavitt et al. identified a family of phage-encoded "codebreakers" that intercept nucleotide-derived immune signals and render the cell defenseless to viral infection.
After the First World War, Anderson was asked to remain in her codebreaking role. She was the only woman hired for the newly created GC&CS at the level of junior assistant (a deceptive title, as she was in fact a codebreaker, not an administrator or interpreter). However, she did not accept the job until it was agreed that she would be paid at the same rate as men for the role. This was an unprecedented demand and shows how exceptional her skills must have been in her first years of learning the art of codebreaking.
However, it can take anywhere from twenty minutes to over an hour for the codebreaker to find a potential match, and the only way to see if it worked is for the thief to put on their neurohelmet and attempt to pilot the 'Mech. If unsuccessful, the thief will suffer minor neurological injury and have to attempt the process again, requiring time and endurance on the part of the thief.[1]

As the United States prepared to send men into the war, the country needed people to help with codebreaking. And women, including Ann White, rose to the task. According to the book Code Girls by Liza Mundy, more than 10,000 women would serve for the U.S. Army and Navy, making up more than half the U.S. codebreakers. Their hardwon efforts were key to winning the war.
Teams that were often mostly women also broke codes and ciphers themselves, sometimes using complex technology and equipment to help. The codebreakers studied long strings of letters and numbers, looking for patterns that might reveal a message hidden in sentences that looked like nonsense.
Frances Steen was one of many women codebreakers who deciphered messages that helped the United States kill the Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor. And Virginia D. Aderholt decoded the intercepted message from the Japanese that they were about to surrender, which ended the war.
