While most speedrunners will chalk up their skills to good luck and practice, neurologists agree that their brains are specialized just for the task. The way speedrunners manipulate their games of choice may seem incomprehensible at first glance. Furthermore, the ways in which speedrunners interact with the games they play can also startle onlookers; for instance, one speedrunner recently beat the Super Mario world record while blindfolded.
It's not uncommon to see speedrunners setting themselves up with a host of real-world controllers and tech to hack their way through a game in record time. That's not really the case for the latest Zelda game though, where it turns out all you need for tearing through Hyrule is a plank of wood, an apple, and the Autobuild feature.
Playing Breath of the Wild keeps speedrunners in a goal-oriented mindset and helps maintain their precision with the mechanics, controls, and movement that will likely transfer over to Tears of the Kingdom.
There are a few levels I'd say I know like the back of my hand, but top speedrunners are the sort who can not only draw their gamehand perfectly from memory, they've probably also whipped out a scalpel and peeled back their gameskin to examine the workings of the underlying muscles and tendons. This metaphor is falling apart, so I'll say: kids, don't play with scalpels. Instead, for the next week you can marvel at dozens of speedrunners demonstrating their mastery of 150-ish games during the latest livestreamed speedrun-o-rama Awesome Games Done Quick. It starts this afternoon!
AGDQ 2024 is still months away, so the organizers have yet to issue a list of participants and games. Past years have seen speedrunners take on hundreds of releases, from newer titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to retro-flavored gems like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Doom. Yes, labeling 2010's Super Mario Galaxy 2 as retro makes me feel old too, but it is what it is.
