You could use one of these on each end of a RJ45 cable to make a serial cable. That serial cable could run through structured cable installed inside a wall or similar, but it cannot run through an ethernet switch or vlan.

Most commonly it is used for connecting a serial RS232, RS485 or RS422 device such as a serial printer, barcode scanner, scale, GPS, sensor or any other consumer or industrial device with a serial interface, to a computer over a standard LAN network.
The advantage of this is obvious; you will be able to control, monitor and communicate with your serial device remotely from a central computer.

The circuitry inside the converter can convert IP/TCP packets to serial data and also convert serial data to IP/TCP packets, so it works in both directions. Before you can start using the converter you need to install driver software on your computer. This driver software is also called virtual COM software because it creates a virtual COM port in your computer's Device Manager when the converter is connected to your computer. Virtual COM software is usually included with the converter, at least if you buy from a reputable seller.

Once the virtual COM port has been created by the Serial to Ethernet converter's driver software the COM port will show up in your computer's Device Manager as if it was a standard built-in COM port, however it actually is the COM port in the converter at the other end of the Ethernet.

The physical signalling, and even more so the logical protocols, used by Ethernet are completely different from those of serial ports, so it's impossible to directly connect a laptop's LAN port to a device's serial port.

However, the same connector is often used for both. I think the usage of an "RJ45" connector for serial console was made popular by Cisco, but network devices from other vendors use the same connector. If you have an adapter with a DE-9 on the other end, and an "RJ45" on the other, it's most likely a Cisco-style console cable. Like this one (image from Wikipedia):

To connect your laptop to a serial port of a device locally, just get a USB serial port adapter. They should be readily available and drivers for the common ones (FT232R and PL2303) can be found for most operating systems.

However, if your use case is to connect to a serial port remotely, as in over the network, then that won't work. You'll need something that connects to the network and talks with the serial port of your device. There are commercially available devices that do just that (terminal servers), but you could solve that with another serial-equipped computer too.

I recently purchaced a smart ups SC1500 and it came with a usb to serial adapter cable and a driver disk for that cable.

I am unable to get those drivers installed on my windows 7 64 bit OS.

The disk states that it is for win2k and xp and versions of linux.

Is there another verision of the software? My computer does not have a serial port so I have no other way of hooking up this ups to my computer.

Any help would be appreciated.

In the old days of personal computers, one of the primary connections available was the RS-232 serial port. Apart from the parallel port, it was the primary means to connect an external device. The connector was reduced from a 25-pin connector to a 9-pin connector, but RS-232 ports remained present on every computer for many years. Built-in RS-232 ports featured direct mapping to memory and worked at a high priority. Data practically flowed directly to and from the software that was accessing the serial port.

In 1996, the Universal Serial Bus (USB) standard was introduced as a replacement for the serial connector and other connector types that were typically found on the back of computers. The USB provided smaller connectors and more data throughput than the serial and parallel interfaces it replaced.

USB devices have high throughput, but they use a shared data bus. Data is wrapped up and transferred in packets. To handle the packets and move data in and out of the program accessing the USB device, a software driver is needed. The software driver sits between the hardware and the computer program you are using, and it must be installed and working correctly.

For USB to RS-232 chips, there are two primary manufacturers: Prolific and FTDI. Because off-brand chips with poor drivers are unreliable, Campbell Scientific recommends and currently sells a cable using an FTDI chip (part number 17394). We chose this cable because it uses a chip that has a certified driver available on Windows Update. (The older cables were silver in color and did not have a driver available for Windows beyond version 7.)

I have seen several cases where old cables could no longer handle 115200 baud, but the cables still worked on low baud rates. There have been many more cases where a USB cable stopped working half-way through a day in the field.

In addition to lowering your latency time, I also recommend disabling the Selective Suspend option for your cable. The Selective Suspend option allows Windows to put your hardware to sleep, which can result in corrupt data packets. To disable the Selective Suspend option, clear the checkbox for the Enable Selective Suspend field on the Advanced Settings window for your device.

We have a couple older CNC machines that use rs232. The onboard storage is very small so they will request the file in chunks from the host PC. I want to update there computers but with phasing out of serial ports, my best option is a USB to serial adapter. Is this a viable option for machines that require this connection to run for hours at a time?

For such an application, I would recommend spending extra to buy an industrial rated interface with electrical isolation. For PCs that have card slots, you can purchase RS232 cards. Industrial models are available with electrical protection built in.

I have an issue where my prolific USB to Serial adapter stopped being detected as 'n "Ports (Com & LPT)" device. It keeps on detecting it is a " USB Composite" device, even after installing the correct Windows drivers downloaded directly from the manufacturer's website. Uninstalling it and reinstalling it doesn't help.

I get the same result on another computer also running Windows 10. It simply refuses to recognize the adapter as a USB to Serial device anymore and keeps on detecting it as a "USB Composite" device as soon as you plug it in after uninstalling it and restarting Windows. Windows also claims that it finds no better driver than the one currently installed when doing a driver search, even after installing the manufacturer drivers.

I'm facing a weird problem with my USB to serial-adapter. The adapter has a Prolific-2303 chipset. The COM port is not getting detected by the Windows 7 laptop.

I've installed the drivers and restarted the computer after installing the drivers.
I've run the driver update from the device manager and updated the drivers.
I also tried to install the COM port manually from the device manager.
I checked the adapter by connecting it to another desktop computer and the COM port is getting detected.

Once the driver for the USB dongle is installed, it is possible to uninstall DriverMax8 from Add Remove Programs. Although you will need to manually delete c:\program files(x86)\Innovative Solutions since the DriverMax uninstaller is sloppy.

It will come down as a cab file, extract from there then right-click the unknown device in device manager and install it. It is a Vista driver with both 32bit and 64 bit versions and should install in win 7/8/10. The actual chip is a Prolific chip with a modded USB ID you may be able to force-install an older Prolific driver on it.

you can't use old RS-232 PPI cable under Win7 64 bit, also use of USB-RS232 adapter can't help simply here. Only under WinXP you have functionality of this old PPI cable. In these days you need min. USB-PPI MultiMaster cable but you need also check OS driver compatibility. Better buy USB PC Adapter A2 as minimum in my opinion. Old PC Adapter ...-972... can be also option but not for Profibus DP higher speed as 1.5 Mbps. Also S7-200 is supported. Check products description mentioned and select one.

I can say from my experience (also have old RS-232 PPI cable, not Multimaster!) and in WinXP SP3 was working also without problems via USB to RS-232 with PPI cable. I think your Multimaster cable can work also with that USB-RS232 Bridge but pay attention to comm speed, because PPI cable can set speed higher than your simple USB adapter!
