once you have set the DNS and completed network settings you will have to re freash the internet content which is 2 items below network setup.
If that does not work set the DNS on your router
Sony doesnt lock down its tv's or other players for internet content
For my hx850 I've wanted to setup the VPN stuff, but it has QuickFlix installed. If I setup the tv and modem with unblock us or similar, will the tv download Netflix and any other region based apps, or do I reset the tv somehow? Can't quite find the right way.
After you have change the IP settings you must refresh the internet content from within the networks settings screen.
I use overplay for my VPN and can change the internet content to any country by changing the DNS settings.
Firmware has no effect as to what you can see, what you can receive is determined by your IP address when you refresh the content. You should try setting to an Japanese IP as they have lots of cool things which are free to watch.
Hi all, I own a Sony HX850. I have been reading all the posts about being able to access Netflix on my TV. Can someone please tell me how I change the DNS to allow for the US. I have contacted Sony, Bigpond and even Media Hint but non are willing to help. I have managed to get Netflix on my computer and would love the same on my TV. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Paul
What are you using to get a Japanese IP that works with the Sony TV? Are you using a VPN on the router? I'm dead keen to get a DNS service with a Japanese POP for my wife, but never been able to find any?
I've only managed to have it display the AU app after I've used my mobile as a wifi hotspot and connected through it. They must have changed the way they identify your location via IP and not by the DNS. My ISP is Mynetfone by way. TV is KDL-42W670A
I've been able to successfully change the DNS settings and was able to refresh and view the US content (can view Amazon Prime/Hulu Plus etc) ok, when I launch Internet Video and then choose the Netflix app, I get the little loading screen up in the top right corner but it crashes after about 10 seconds and takes me back to whatever channel I was on before pushing the "Home" button.
I'm running entirely over wifi and as I said, can access the other services fine (although I haven't signed up with Amazon Prime, can merely view the listing of the material) but cannot get to the stage of the Netflix app supplying a registration code. Is anyone else having/have had the same issue?
I just wondering how do you get the other channels as well, I've got the same model sony with you but I only see Netflix and Hulu, I don't see many channels like UNO DNS mention on the website. Any input will be great. thx
Although this is on the Unotelly website, when they instructed me to go through the process carefully as below all work on the TV as well.
I was clearly not doing step 2) correctly previously. Step 3) was not really needed.
What I have realised though is my Sony account identifies my TV as a non-US TV. When I click "Premium Services" on the website it only shows me a limited number of services including ones for Australia.
I created my Sony account with the "DNS hack" enabled and selected US as my country. Still nothing. It appears as though it's the TV itself that's identifying itself as an Australian device with Sony.
Seems to run slower through the TV, and the app is lacking basic Netflix features such as picking up where you left off on a TV series, and the fact that the next episode doesn't auto-load as well is annoying and slows things down.
I just use my iPad or iPhone. Start Netflix on them and then push the signal to the TV using the Sony DLNA (similar to Airplay. My iPad will show my TV as one of the device. Then the Sony Netflix app will appear on the TV with a login screen. Enter your login and then you can control Netflix using the Sony remote. You can then switch off the iPad app.
I wonder if flashing the AMERICAS firmware through USB on 55X9004 is do-able, however the file sizes are off by 50MB and it looks to run a script to check the exact file name of the firmware file, and you modify the US one to match AUS, it detects its been modified and doesnt let you update. zzzzzz
Getflix works just as fine for masking the location and getting netflix to work. I wfinally got it to work by pushing Netflix app from my phone to the TV via Wifi Direct, although the phone itself doesnt support wifi direct.
Point is that the newer TV's are region locked at firmware level. If someone can get the US version of the firmware AAA instead of GAA (rest of the world including Aus) to run on 9004a that would be amazing as for the only workaround is to push the app to the Tv everytime you want to watch Netflix.
Maybe a warning to older Bravia series owner of not to upgrade to newer firmware versions if everything is working fine for them sicne they wouldnt want to loose the ability to run Netflix natively on the TV without DLNA push from other devices etc.
Crap, Sony does not region lock its firmwares, the GAA, AAA, EUB etc determine what the firmwares functions is predominatley the tuning, decoding and inputs configs are.
Once the main board has had firmware loaded you wont be able to change its model easily and definatley not load another regions firmware.
Completed a training course last month on repairing these newer sets and we were advised that using services like Netflix and others are available to the user regardless of your region.
There are no Apps per say on a TV, what they are are hyperlinks which get uploaded from dedicated servers in Japan, depending on your IP it will upload a list of links that you can watch depending on your location.
When you click the icon it takes you to the site using a browser and then downloads the content you can watch.
Theres no option to select the AMERICAS region on the GAA firmware, your comment about tuning and inputs is something I agree with, but definitely not the one which you will never be able to change model easily.
My guess is the AAA firmware for this TV goes and fetches the content which has been approved for the AAA region hence the apps like Netflix/Hulu etc appear under SEN/Applications. No one said there are apps on the TV by default, the content the end user sees is what the device pulls from the server based on its ...take a guess..'Region/IP'.
Did anyone get the 1 year free codes after submitting the email ID in the promotional App. I submitted some 10-15 min ago and still no email. Please update here on how to get the 1 year free Netflix/Hulu Plus and Music Unlimited.
I got the 1 year free Netflix/Hulu offer. Initially it kept saying server error try again, but in the next day or two the email add submit worked and I got the email with the activation codes and links in 15-20 minutes. Gluck.
Well looks like the promo offer does not work anymore either due to my model KDL50W670A or it might have finished by 31-Dec-2013. I have put in my email and submitted multiple times (after resetting TV as well) but to no avail, not receiving any email from Sony with the requisite redeemable Netflix/Hulu codes. Anyone had success with a KDL50W670A recently please report back.
May I ask, with the streaming of Netflix/Hulu etc., what kind of internet speed and bandwidth would be required for a trouble free experience? I've just got the w900, and moving into a new place soon,.. so also looking at internet providers.
1st issue is Sony KDL50W670 is not in the list of TVs for this promo and looks like it doesnot work anymore. Can anyone here with a W670 please confirm if they got the 1 year Promo codes via email successfully. Some pointers will really be appreciated.
I got the Netflix year promo working with the W670A, but had troubles with Huluplus and gave up. Huluplus keeps stopping every couple of minutes anyway to load, so not practical to watch.
I can only assume bandwidth issues to the US via my provider (Optus), but find it strange that Netflix is great and Huluplus so terrible.

As for Hulu Plus, if you are using Unotelly at the end of the settings page, you can change the server for Hulu Plus, see if that helps. I had an issue like that before and changing to an alternate server worked perfectly.

Same here on a KDL50W670A, got the Netflix and Hulu Plus 1 year code today morning. Applied on to the account already and got a message saying US $95.88 applied to account. I just had my last payment from card and subscription renewed 2 days back. So I guess the account should now have almost 13 months of subscription.
Can anyone confirm this ?
