The above two songs clearly suggest that the Patuas wish to purify their image by denying the negative associations of being spies, beggars, or untouchables attributed to them by higher ranking and more affluent members of their surrounding society by emphasizing the positive qualities they espouse, such as truth and justice, art, poetry, music, and craftsmanship. In the remainder of this essay, I do not wish to romanticize the Patuas through positive stereotyping, as many Bengali nationalists did during the independence movement, for this can be just as dangerous to their collective welfare as the negative ones concerning them.
