Burbsec for July will be on July 12th (*gasp*--the SECOND Thursday of July).

After consulting with several of the most loyal attendees of Burbsec
(as I sure wasn't making this decision on my own), we're taking a rare
departure from our usual timing due both to the Independence Day
holiday and... [drumroll] no one felt as attached to our traditional
"first Thursday" as they did to .... free drinks courtesy of Rapid7!

The 27 who attended June's burbsec owe thanks to our fearless Ben0xA,
whose idea led to Rapid7's offer of what I'll call "apology libations"
to the Chicago area, with promises of a Chris-Trainortastic future.
(Or something like that?!). Rapid7's new Chicago area rep Chris
Trainor ("from Metasploit") has vowed his attendance at the July
burbsec, and the date change allows him to come and bring R7's
support. Welcome Chris, and an honest thanks to R7 for their sense of
humor and their support of community events like this and Security
BSides Chicago.

Tomorrow night (or today depending on when you read this), is
Burbsec! See you at the Fox and Hound in Schaumburg from 6-10?pm --
ask for the Burbsec group, typically in the back left corner room with
the pool tables.

For those who've never been: just show up, order a drink from the
friendly wait staff, and ask around for Chris or Todd--we'll be happy
to help you get to know other information security folks in the area.
Attendance is usually between 30 and 40 people and the last of them
have never left before 10pm. This month I'm looking forward to
asking the many who went to Blackhat/Defcon/BsidesLV what talks I need
to chase down to watch.

Burbsec regulars were down in Louisville in force this past Thursday

"Rolling into February it's time for another Burbsec. Come on out and
avoid the onset of cabin fever. Refreshments and appetizers sponsored
this month by Trustwave's Mike Janke.

Burbsec is a monthly gathering of security professional, usually held
on the first Thursday of the month at the Fox & Hound 1416 Roselle,
Schaumburg Il. Open to everyone, things generally start up around 6 PM
and often run until after 10PM.

If you never attended a Burbsec it's highly recommended. It's always a
good time, folks are friendly, and the atmosphere relaxed. If you're
looking to make a move, searching for some of the sharpest security
minds in Chicagoland, interested in hearing some honest opinions of a
variety of security products and services or just want to hang out
with people who are as passionate about this stuff as you are, Burbsec
is the place.

2) Fox and Hound Schaumburg has declared Burbsec as their business of
the month somehow. I'm not making this up. State your
affiliation with Burbsec between 11am and 4pm weekdays at Fox and
Hound Schaumburg and you'll get 20% off food. I explained to
the group organizer who bestowed this discount upon us and
mentioned badges or membership cards that we had the bandits
in Blazing Saddles view about badges. She was okay with that.
At any rate, don't miss out on a food discount at Fox and Hound
for lunches in February!

it's no longer recognized as National Holiday...nonetheless I will be

Happy March, everybody! Burbsec is this Thursday at Fox & Hound

If you haven't visited http://burbsec.com in a while, Steve McGrath
has really spruced the place up (thanks Steve!). There are now 3
different Burbsec meet ups given how big Chicagoland is. The original
is referred to on the website as Burbsec Prime, and there is also
Burbsec West run by Jacob and Burbsec North run by Chris H. If
you're on twitter, those are @burbsecprime @burbsecwest and
@burbsecnorth for your following pleasure. Jeff would be sad if I
didn't also mention @burbseceast which has never met, but is imagined
on a boat. Ben was also kind enough to create an IRC channel on
freenode accessible with a web interface right off the site with the
Chat link (or join #burbsec on freenode). There are even some
spinoffs on the site such as Burbsec Racing (a group that frequently
goes cart racing) and Burbsec Cigars. In short, there's little
wanting for opportunities to get to know other infosec pros in
Chicagoland!

On the conference scene, Security B-Sides Chicago and Thotcon are on
the horizon. Thotcon (Fri Apr 25) only has limited tickets left at

(free! Sat April 26

are being released in batches starting last week. Be sure to get
