"Well, well..." Maleficent has indeed arrived. Before Disney's 'Maleficent' makes its grand entrance in theaters on May 30, a new clip and a massive gallery of movie stills and concept art have been released to both preview Angelina Jolie's turn as the iconic 'Sleeping Beauty' character and to dive into her world of magic, fairies and fantastical creatures.

Much like the animated film of the story of Princess Aurora (played by Elle Fanning), 'Maleficent' takes us to the moment of her Christening where the dark fairy unceremoniously shows up to curse the child to one day prick her finger and fall into a deep, death-like sleep. However, what we haven't seen before are the events leading Maleficent to turn to her dark ways.

Thanks to newly released concept art and photos from the film, we see both what Maleficent's life was like pre-villainous transformation and the world in which she dwells. Being a fairy of the forest, she sported massive, bird-like wings and commanded a bevy of creatures, including all manner of fae and her shape-shifting crow.

Angelina Jolie is joined by a cast that includes Sharlto Copley as King Stefan; Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton and Lesley Manville as the three good fairies; up-and-comer Brenton Thwaites as Prince Phillip; and even Jolie's own daughter, Vivienne, as a baby Princess Aurora.

In an exclusive clip from Walt Disney Pictures' Maleficent, Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) finds the magical loom. Sixteen years earlier, after crashing the princess's baptism, the Mistress of All Evil (Angelina Jolie) cursed the spike so that it would one day induce a "sleep like death." As fans of Sleeping Beauty well know, the princess does indeed prick her finger and fall into a deep slumber.

"I think all kids are curious," the global superstar said. "They're drawn to things that are dark. It's not just simply a desire to be wicked. I think there are things that frighten us in life, and especially children, they want to understand so they can take it on, or they want to understand so it frightens them less."

Disney has released the first clip from Robert Stromberg's Maleficent. The film tells the story of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the titular villain (Angelina Jolie), and how a betrayal sets off a drive for revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides. Even though this is the first clip, we've already seen a good portion of it in the previous marketing materials, so it seems like Disney is still keeping the film closely under (horn) wraps. But the one constant is how much fun Jolie is having with the role, and that comes through loud and clear in this scene.

Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie as the title character and tells the story of a "vindictive fairy [who] is driven to curse an infant princess only to realize the child may be the only one who can restore peace". The film will focus on the villain's back story.Advertisement

The latest clip from the adventure thriller finds Aurora walking to her eternal sleep right before the end of her 16 birthday, as predicted by the curse cast by the Mistress of All Evil on her baptism. You can check out the video here.
