Merged (large) batch of repository rework patches to main

These are from Johannes Berg's substantial pending series that (among
other things) adds support for additional types of repositories.

Given the size, I'm not going to post all the patches here. Instead I
merged them without fast forwarding, so you can easily distinguish them
by looking at a000d0643bd2483f4b0279eefc0fed8b46144b18 in gitk, magit,
git log --graph, etc.:

Though we've been looking at these for a good while, it's a lot of
