Hi,

So are you guys all ready for tomorrow?

I think you can get a few quid off the ticket if you buy online before.

_*Nearly*_ got AIX desktop (gnome) up and running
_*Nearly*_ got AIX using my nis and autohome maps properly
_*Nearly*_ got Linux (suse cos it the only distro that has a ppc version
that both installed and booted afterwards) running properly on a Power
520 with a 4.2 Ghz processor.
_*Nearly*_ pulling my hair out (its just I ain't got none so its only a
nearly) cos not even Ubuntu is this frustrating

and to top it all I'm _*nearly *_50 and I mean very very nearly

god its depressing!!

And before anyone says
"there's a Ubuntu and deb versions for ppc" or "there's a rhel version
for PPC"
the Ubuntu and deb versions installed but wouldn't boot afterwards, I
have no money to pay for anything RHEL based so I am stuck wiv openSUSE.

^ Will you be able to show us this kit at the weekend (barcamp)?

I think we should be down in bmth Fri evening to sleep in Karsten's
squat (don't ask).

Oh sweet. Now all you need is a lecturer that can show the students how to
use the kit. Without the students wanting to pull their hair out that is.

Well it sounds like a well formed squat. As long as you don't need a beer
poop, after an evening in the goat :/

Might let you play with my toys if you ask nicely

can anyone tell me how to get gdm, xdm or kdm running on a headless suse
box, any other distro just handles not haveing a monitor but not suse
have tried bluffing the screen in the xorg.conf anbybody know how to
stop x from probing for a screen.

Before anyone says anything silly, remember you need a window manager
(gdm, xdm or kdm) running even on a headless box if you want to use
xdmcp and NO vnc is not good enough for what I want

sounds like you need to get some poop bags, we used to use bags when we
did close reconnaisance stuff its not good.

Oh your asking for it and I'm too childish to resist. Shaun is going to
see a man about a rim job on Friday.

Is this combined with the rim job?

OK to make up for the above. Though probably not as I've not tried this.

Have a look at /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers. It is my understanding you start
here by disabling the local X server to stop it a) killing your console in
any weird way and b) trying some insane defaults.

Now I'm not sure if X will let remote connections in. That would be my
"step 2".

My uncle used to have a stick/string arrangement for use with a carrier
bag. One end of the string on one handle of the bag. String over the
shoulder and you've got a stick in one hand and the other side of the
carrier bag in the other.

Just don't store it in the fridge.

Aside from the joking. Best of luck.

Is this the NOC Unix Administrator position?

Knew someone had to say about rim(pervert)
the job title is "service engineering specialist" didn't know they had
another vacancy there.

Still no joy, editing the Xservers file made no difference. Just can't
work it out and its summink really stupid, never really had to deal with
this problem on anything else and that includes, deb, ubuntu, redhat,
centos, solaris, AIX,

here's the error from the log, the xorg.conf file its from a headless
centos box

Hi Ralph
you are correct, you have put your finger right on the problem every
time I tried to start gdm it fellover with X errors when it probed for a
graphics card that didn't exist. So I was trying to find a way of
stopping anything probing for the graphics card. Never had this issue
with a headless unit before. I have since uninstalled gdm and started
xdm which works but you get to input your username and password then the
desktop disappears but I get no log messages telling me why its crashed,
but at least I am a little further on.

Wonder why I am putting myself through the pain of getting Linux running
on a power series, have already spent ages with Debian and Ubuntu trying
to find out why they would install but not boot even though all yaboot
stuff seemed ok and pointing to the correct paths/devices. I could even
boot the lpar off of a cd and chroot to the hard disc install and use
all the paths that were in the yaboot configs. But I got no chance of
getting this place to pay 2k for a SUSE or RHEL subscription for there
Power series versions. The whole exercise was to try a tool for the
Linux distro that acts as an abstraction layer so you can run native
Linux x86 apps on Power linux, I wanted to see if it worked like they say.

cheers

Could be worth putting `touch /tmp/65g3JBG0' near the start of
~/.Xsession to see if xdm is getting as far as that, it not then work
backwards, e.g. Xstartup. Is xdm writing to the log files? If not,
perhaps it's writing them somewhere unusual.

Cheers,
Ralph.

cheers for your help Ralph but I just uninstalled the Gnome desktop
rpm's restarted xdm and icewm is working over xdmcp ooooohh!! . There's
no desktop chooser on the login screen but at least I have got somewhere
and should be nothing to turn that into xfce.

So we now have AIX and opensuse on IBM iron hope your all excited for
the weekend.

If your really lucky might have a play with the sun T series
(coothreads) boxes I have as well.

off home now
see those who are coming to barcamp, on saturday.

Your desktop chooser for xdm is 'vi ~/.Xsession' ;)
