The Freedom Institute, the Bakrie Center Foundation and the University of New South Wales,
Canberra cordially invite you to the launch of a new book published by Palgrave MacMillan entitled
‘Indonesia’s Ascent: Power, Leadership and the Regional Order’ to be held at:
Venue
Day and Time
: Freedom Institute Wisma Proklamasi, Jl. Proklamasi No. 41, Menteng
: 27 May, 2015 from 10.00 – 12 Book Launch, 12.00 - Lunch
This sixteen chapter volume was co-edited by Associate Professor Christopher Roberts
(Director of Executive Education, UNSW, Canberra), Dr. Ahmad D. Habir, Senior Fellow, Strategic
Asia and Adjunct Associate Professor, UNSW, Canberra, and Associate Professor Leonard Sebastian
(Coordinator of the Indonesia Program at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies).
A key purpose behind the book was to provide a timely analysis of the most significant domestic and
transnational challenges associated with Indonesia’s ascent. We believe that the book also makes an
important contribution because close to half of its authors are from Indonesia and it therefore provides
insights that are more reflective of Indonesian perspectives as well as the realities on the ground.
Consequently, the contributors in this book examine a range of issues including Indonesia’s economic
resources, political institutions, identity and independence, as well as Jakarta’s regional relations,
leadership and the exercise of hard and soft power. The book also examines the likely directions for
Indonesian foreign policy following the election of President Joko Widodo in 2014 and offers a range
of assessments concerning the potential trajectory of Indonesia’s future.
