Hey all,
I saw today that Useful Plants is having a 10% off sale... Oct 23-25
"Our first plant sale in 5 years! 10% off all plants, with deeper discounts on overstock plants. We have a great variety of apples, blueberries, and hazelnuts, with most other plants in stock.
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 10-4 each day, October 23-25
Cash or check preferred. 5% charge for credit cards."
I know we have money in our fund and straight up I'm not willing to figure out how to release those funds.
What I am willing to do is see if accept cash donations at my house in order to get some plants, find a place in Asheville to dig them into the ground for the winter, and figure out places to plant them in the spring. I personally am for asking business owners if we can plant them around what they own, Around Haywood still has some prime spots....as this is where the people walk, and often is convenient for harvesting and tending the plants, is highly visible to public, and business owners appreciate the time spent doing a bit of landscape for them, and often, they care about having food too. Another thought is to put them in section 8 housing.
So, the things to tell me are:
1. How much you money monies you are interested in donating
2. What types of plants you want that money to buy (especially if you have a location in mind...what would grow well there/be appropriate)
3. If you have an idea of where we could have a little nursery for these (closer to one of our houses who will help tend them the better)
4. Where you want to plant them (or if you give reigns over to me, who will most likely find spots in Wavl)
5. If you'd be willing to physically go to Earthaven to pick these up
I just thought today about how we need to keep planting planting planting....then even if 5% of them succeed for the duration of their lives, then we will still have success .... like Montford Rec is gonna get leveled, but at least there are a few more spots where we have some food growing.
If we do get a few folks donating monies and can't get someone out there... Debbie, would you be willing to hold on to plants and possibly bring to Asheville if you do a run here?
If this idea doesn't work out, I'm interested in learning how to stool plants to get our own rootstocks and be able to graft onto them.I don't have much real estate at my house, but I'd love if there were spots we were doing this and could keep our own little nursery going. If anyone is already doing it and wants to show me, or wants to learn with me, let me know.
Lastly, I've mulched and weeded some at west end bakery. It seems time to put protection around trees at their base. The apple there got nibbled at bottom, but is doing well. A cherry has died, and if we planted a fig, it died. Service berries are doing well, one cherry tree is there to graft in spring, and blueberries survived. This area certainly could use another planting of a couple trees and blueberries. Another apple and cherry would be smart for pollination, and I have a cherry roostock I can donate. I standardly forget about the pollination needs.
Thanks for all you do, including reading my long emails.
Peace,
Gabi
