Kousa Dogwood.    I'll chew the fruits like bubble gum and spit them out.  Some are more flavorful than others.  On my list to make a fermented beverage out of them; the dusty looking fruits are an indicator for potential natural yeast.   (Side note: Che fruits had an active fermentation for me without the addition of packaged yeast).  Both Che and Kousa are fruiting now in West Asheville and seem to be towards the end of their crops.

I want to say Cousa dogwood. Squish it to check the inside against google photos. They are edible though some are more astringent tasting than others.

Yup, that's a kousa!

Most astringency is in the skin. I prefer to smoosh the innards out and not chew on the skin itself if I'm just snackin'.

The skin carries amounts of yeast and also spores of some kind of white floaty mold (never had a wild-yeasted kousa mead that didn't get the secondary infection, not that it hurt the final product)

Big fan of this fruit!

There are a few seedless ones around the area.
