As many of you know one of the oldest community food forests in the United States is located in the East End/Valley Street neighborhood of Asheville. The Dr. George Washington Carver Edible Park is home to over 40 varieties of fruit and nut trees. It takes a dedicated group of volunteers to maintain this space named after the famous inventor and agricultural scientist. The park was installed 25 years ago, and the Buncombe Fruit & Nut Club has been instrumental in the upkeep of the park over the years.
Join us for our upcoming community work day on Friday, April 28 from 2:30pm to 5:30pm, weather permitting. The park is located at 30 George Washington Carver Avenue, and there is parking available in the Stephens-Lee Recreation Center parking lot. Lynx Bergdahl from Bountiful Cities will be guiding us through mulching, tree and shrub care, picking up trash, clearing invasives, and planting. We are also working towards expanding the edible park during the growing season, and hands-on demonstrations of gardening skills will be provided throughout the day.
We will have some extra tools for everyone to use, as well as hand sanitizer, but folks are encouraged to bring gloves, hand tools, water, and anything else they need to be comfortable in the elements. Masks are welcome but not required.
These community work days are presented in partnership with the City of Asheville, and updates can be found on the Dr. George Washington Carver Edible Park Facebook Page. Come give your time and support to Asheville's first edible forest ecosystem! We look forward to seeing you there.
