Fictional Pigs! Yay.

This quiz will basically be the same thing as this quiz, just with pigs instead of rodents.

Here are the pigs that rer2121 and I have thought of so far:

Snowball (Animal Farm)
Piglet (Winnie the Pooh)
Wilbur (Charlotte's Web)
Babe (Babe)
Porky Pig (Looney Tunes)
Hamm (Toy Story)
Miss Piggy (The Muppets)
Pumbaa (The Lion King)

Since this is really the first quiz thread, I'm not quite sure what else to say.
So, yeah. Let's collaborate!

I think this quiz would be really cool as an image quiz. I don't have any other pigs yet, but I will try to think of some.

napb: Will we be able to produce publish-ready image quizzes (like what editors are able to do)?

Arnold from Green Acres, as Jules from Pulp Fiction would tell ya, He's one charming pig!

The 3 Little Pigs also if trios count (Hey, they lost their homes for this quiz!)

Here are a few more:

Pigma Dengar (from Star Fox)
Olivia (children's book series)
Salomey (from Lil' Abner)
Runt of the Litter (from Chicken Little)
Spider-Pig (from The Simpsons Movie)

I've come up with a few obscure ones:
  • Ace (from the book Ace, by Dick King Smith
  • Hamilton (from the TV show Maggie & the Ferocious Beast)
  • Napoleon (from the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell)
  • Squealer (also from Animal Farm)
  • Runt (from the movie Chicken Little)
  • Treat Heart Pig (from Care Bears)

I think it would be best to use Napoleon from Animal Farm, as Snowball was only in part of the novel and Napoleon is the main character.
Or it could ask for either Snowball or Napoleon.

Whenever you want, BZ   --    As the "Owner" of this quiz, that's your call; and you can put it together yourself, or ask for people to help you.

When your "team for this quiz" feels it is ready to contribute, and YOU are comfortable with it, make a post here to that effect;  I'll just give it one last look (as that will be my responsibility for all quizzes that we make public).

How about as a bonus, you use the Gamorrean Guards from Jabba's Palace in Star Wars.  They are the ugly piglike guards with axes.  I don't expect the general public to know their names (i had to look up the species names), and they aren't really specific fictional pigs.

Not sure how good of an idea is, but I was thinking the 3 little pigs from the popular fairy tale. They are multiple pigs, but... Just a thought

We should now start working on the clues in the quiz. I've already started with some.

Also, on a slightly less important note, I added some more-obscure bonus answers to the quiz. They won't function as actual bonuses, I'm just wondering if we should include them or not.
Since we only have 15 famous-enough pigs, I'm still definitely open for suggestions.

Since it has proven tough to get a good list of well-known little piggies, what about somehow expanding the quiz concept a bit... I'm not sure exactly what would work (because I don't know all of the characters well enough), just tossing this out there:

Maybe "Fictional Pigs and their Owners" or "Fictional Pigs and their Friends" ....Associates.... Nemeses.... or what-have-you....

And if that's not what you want (or wouldn't help), you can tell me straight!  :)

I haven't been a big part of this project, but I agree with Napb. What about fictional farm animals? Maybe like adding fictional cows or fictional goats or fictional horses to the idea of fictional pigs. Then group by hint.

If you do happen to add any my suggestions would be Choppy the Goat (from Fairly OddParents). I'm not sure how many people would actually know that (I'll admit it is a little outdated) , but maybe just as a bonus.

That would be interesting.  Some kind of "Fictional Barnyard" kind of quiz.  I think that would turn a good idea into a great one.  But that's of course not to say that the quiz as it stands isn't good enough, because it certainly is.  And while there are lots of different fictional animals, it seems to me that there are more pigs than any other (at least when looking at farm animals - I'm sure dogs and cats have them beat).  I think either choice in this case is a good one.

"Fictional Barnyard" would actually be awesome. Now, would we group the answers by animal or just say what they are in the hint (or neither)?

I think it would be better to group by animal using the third column for the hint, but if the hints are too long then we might have to just lump them all together.

I love the idea of fictional barnyard, I think we should group by animal. Depending on how many animals you want in your quiz here are some suggestions:
Fictional Horses
Fictional Ducks
Fictional Sheep
Fictional Cows
Fictional Chickens
Fictional Goats
I would also stay away from typical house animals, so we can keep the integrity of "Barnyard". Please keep us informed on which ones you want to use.
This quiz sounds like fun:).

I think we should keep it simple and limit it to pigs, cows, and horses. The formatting would be a little messy if there were too many categories, and it might be hard to find an equal amount of all of them.

Just making sure I'm clear:  When you say "group" I'm assuming you mean "put them together in sequence",

  • the first series of clues are about pigs
  • the next several are chickens, and so forth,
(as opposed to using the "group answers with same hint" function, which would preclude the possibility of specific hints of course)

Maybe it would work best to keep them in random order: Have the hint in the first column, then the answer, and then the third column would be type of farm animal; that way you can sequence them in any order you want.

When grouping by hint, I think that you can put a hint in the extra column and that will become the new hint.

As for some possible animals to use:
Otis and Daisy the cows- both from Barnyard
Betsy and Bitsy from Charlotte's Web
Ferdinand the Bull from the children's story.

Just one more clarification, BZ,  -- Do you plan to say in your game notes that the animals appearing in the quiz are types of animals which "can be found in a barnyard" but that the characters themselves do not necessarily reside in, or spend time in, a barnyard?

Without some sort of clarification, a lot of players will comment "Hey, so and so doesn't live in a barnyard... there wasn't even a barnyard in that movie!", and so forth.

Also, for us to provide suggestions to you, we need to know whether that distinction applies or not.

If you decide to ONLY use animal characters who DO clearly spend time in a barnyard, then we'll search for more answers for you with that in mind.

If you will use ANY animal character, regardless of whether or not it has an actual barnyard affiliation, then we'll have that much broader of a choice.

If that is the case, maybe the actual title of the quiz would also be best if it reflected wider parameters, such as the more basic  "Fictional Pigs, Cows and Horses" which would solve this issue entirely.

Well as far as Horses theres

Silver (The Lone Ranger tv show)
Hidalgo (the race horse which many consider more legend than fact)
Mister Ed (Mister Ed tv show)
Flicka (My Friend Flicka novel)
Shadowfax (LOTR)
Bill (pony from LOTR)
Argo (Xena; Warrior Princess tv show)
Pokey (The Gumby Show)
Bullseye (Toy Story films)
Toronado (Zorro stories)

Would Babe the Blue Ox (Paul Bunyan legend) count for cows?

Sorry about all this. And yes, I would love to "pursue" it.

I've renamed the quiz to "Fictional Pigs, Cows, and Horses" to get rid of any confusion. Also, I'm still lacking a good clue for Napoleon.
We should probably think of more cows and horses now. 10 of each would probably be good.
I'm still wondering how I should group the answers. By hint? In three columns? By answer color?

I notice the title actually now says "Famous...." and I like that! (It sounds nice, and more appealing than "fictional" so I hope you plan to keep it thus).

A few thoughts:
  • Make a new post summarizing all the animals you now have, and plan to use
  • As the search goes out to find Cows, keep the option open of using them or not.  If not many can be found, this might need to turn into the "Famous Pigs and Horses" quiz (or, the idea posed in the next bullet below). I'm ignorant about fictional Cows, other than Elsie (Borden's advertising icon).
  • Another option, which would yield a whole bunch of great, interesting well-known animal characters, is to further revise the quiz to "Famous Ungulates" or "Famous Hooved Animal Characters"... which would open the door for the quiz to include
    • Horses
    • Pigs
    • Cattle
    • Goats
    • Sheep
    • Moose
    • Deer
    • Camels
    • and more...
  • Regarding number of columns, I think it comes down to whether or not all of the material you want to include fits in One Hint, or whether extra help would be needed for the players in such a third column.  And your decision on "grouping" might still need to wait until you see what kind of response you get for Cows; or whether some of the new ideas above are considered.

Well BZ on the subject of a Napoleon clue you could go with something like

"Main villain of George Orwell's Animal Farm" or "Orwellian villain of novel Animal Farm"

You could also nudge the quiz-taker a little more by following up with a semi colon and "shares name with diminutive French general"

"Orwellian villain of novel Animal Farm; shares name of diminutive French general" or something to that effect...

BZ: Regarding Horses and Cows --

HORSES

Here’s what Zalkon2004 had suggested for horses earlier; and I’ve added some afterwards.

The ones in bold are those that I personally have heard of, and that I think are reasonably well known. Some of the ones I did not bold from Zalkon2004’s list may be well-known as well – I’ll let people chime in if so.

  • Silver (The Lone Ranger’s horse tv show)
  • Hidalgo (the race horse which many consider more legend than fact)
  • Mister Ed (Mister Ed tv show)
  • Flicka (My Friend Flicka novel)
  • Shadowfax (Gandalf’s horse, LOTR)
  • Bill (pony from LOTR)
  • Argo (Xena; Warrior Princess tv show)
  • Pokey (The Gumby Show)
  • Bullseye (Woody’s horse - Toy Story films)
  • Toronado (Zorro stories)

Here are the ones I know of in addition to the above:

  • Black Beauty -  famous Anna Sewell novel/movie
  • Bree – The Horse and His Boy (Narnia series) C.S. Lewis
  • Fury – Titular equine character of the Western TV series starring Peter Graves
  • Horse of a Different Color – Wizard of Oz (if it is clued as "The ____ __ __ _____ ______ from the Wizard of Oz"
  • Khartoum – the race horse in The Godfather in a very, er, famous scene
  • Pegasus – Mythological winged horse
  • Pie-O-My – Ralph Cifaretto’s horse (and Tony’s painting) in The Sopranos
  • Quick Draw McGraw – Titular Hannah Barbera cartoon show character
  • Scout – Tonto’s horse in The Lone Ranger
  • Stewball – Racehorse in Peter, Paul & Mary song
  • The Black Stallion – famous book/movie
  • The Old Gray Mare – traditional song
  • Trigger – Roy Rogers’ horse
  • Buttermilk – Dale Evans’ horse

COWS

For Cows – sorry, but I think that’s a dead end. I could only find two, and although they were quite “famous” in their day, they have not been appearing, or promoted much in modern times.

  • Elsie – Borden’s dairy products - famous product logo character
  • Clarabelle – Very early Disney character

So, I think you’ve got a “Famous Pigs and Horses” quiz at this point.

Bessy the cow; Daisy the cow (and a couple others from the same movie) at the sites below.

Ferdinand the Bull

President Taft kept a family dairy cow named Pauline Wayne on the White House lawn. For two years, Pauline supplied Taft and his family with fresh milk. When Taft left office in 1913, Pauline was shipped back to her former owner in Wisconsin. After that, pasteurized milk replaced raw milk at the White House. A New York Times article dated February 2, 1913, announced the departure of the Taft’s beloved cow this way: “Pauline Wayne, President Taft’s famous Holstein cow, will follow him into retirement March 4.”

Mrs. O' Leary's cow,   The article below claims that she may not have been responsible for the fire!

These plus dozens more listed on the website following the list.

Cowntess. A life-size talking Holstein cow on Pee-wee’s Playhouse (1986-1990)
TaurusThe name used by Zeus when he took the shape of a white bull to seduce Europa, daughter of Phoenician King Agenor
Wool E. Bull. Mascot of the Durham (North Carolina) Bulls basketball club
Norman. Calf, then adult steer, who appeared with Billy Crystal in the movies City Slickers andCity Slickers 2

No doubt, most of these would qualify as the relatively tough ones.

Cyril

@popestcyril - I'm glad you took the time to look into those and post them. Thanks.

"Bulls" were one of a handful of animal-types I'd thought of when considering increasing the quiz to include hooved animals. But a bull is not a cow.

Sadly I still don't think there are many well-known cows, even among the ones you've added.  So it seems pointless to try to force the quiz to include a bunch of them only to have maybe 10 to 25% of the players be able to guess any of them from written clues.

So I think it's come down to focusing on Pigs & Horses, unless BanjoZebra thinks otherwise.

It would be nice if we can develop the quiz from the perspective of having it be fun & viable for the players, and have a good percentage of "gettable" critters.

We seem to have enough pigs and horses for about 20 reasonable clue-sets. If BZ wants to decide on a final set, and wants help in writing the clues then we'll do that; or BZ can take care of that. It's going to have to be a relatively short quiz given the current parameters.

I would also second napb's suggestion for Pegasus to be included. It may/may not be harder but I don't think it's obscure. It's been used as a logo for many companies and given the all the Greek/Roman myth quizzes on Sporcle I think it would work. Just my two pennies though :)

What about the 'Trojan horse' from the the Iliad? Clue could be something like - Deceptive ploy used by Greeks in Homer's The Iliad.

Now here's a question - Trigger was a real horse so with that precedent would horses like Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Cigar, Citation, or Secretariat count?

BZ - I do NOT want to release it tonight.

I want to wait until after this weekend.  Too many players are involved in family gatherings and won't be playing.  I think we'd lose a huge chunk of players now.   I'll e-mail you and we can discuss.

Thanks,
Gordy

So, just to clarify the above for everyone:

For over a year I've been paying attention to the frequency of game-playing and the "noticeablility" of quizzes.  Weekends are always slower; or quizzes end up being overlooked.  Holidays are even slower.  Too much time is spent dealing with the families instead of playing Sporcle quizzes. (Just kidding!)

But the fact is, for the 4-5 day Thanksgiving weekend, that a lot of people who usually hang with their computer are hanging with friends & family, eating, playing Pictionary, eating, doing Xmas shopping, eating, going to the latest James Bond movie, being sorry they ate so much, and driving the in-laws to the airport, and so on.  Did I mention wrapping leftovers?

I apologize for giving the impression to everyone that I wanted to try to "hurry up and get this quiz out".  I DID want to "move it along", because some other BunchofCurator quizzes are nearing completion, and I want us to release this one first.

But all along, I've had my eye on the calendar and knew I would not want to release anything between today (Wednesday) and Sunday; and I should have made that clear to BanjoZebra and to all of you ahead of time.

OK!  BanjoZebra released the quiz last night:  “Oink! Neigh!” Famous Pigs and Horses

Nice job everyone!

As happens to all of us, (and will probably happen again, as we are STILL only "human-curators"), the quiz will be tweaked as necessary; I'm trying to keep a close eye on it and attend to issues.

As you'll notice in the quiz comments, there were a couple of adjustments I made to some clues in response to comments --

Also, BZ had used a really nice color-formatting, and had set it up perfectly for the Horse-column text to be White.  Strangely, as a commenter noted, the Wrong answers did not turn up Red in THAT column!

So I reported it as a possible bug, and temporarily removed the White Text from the Horsies' column -- thus, both columns are now standard black text. I also slightly "lightened" the color of the Horse-column background from Sienna to Tan because the Red Wrong-answer text was difficult to read in the darker Sienna.
