Bald Television Characters Picture Quiz
-naming the show or character will count as a correct answer

The wonderful citkeane volunteered to put the pictures together once we have found them all.

So I'm thinking we need something like 20, 24, or 25 bald TV characters. Posting the character's name and the show they are from would be great. And posting with a link to a quality picture as well would be even better. Or if someone just posted the character and you like looking through pictures, you can add it for them. I envision it looking something like this in terms of how much of the character will be shown.

I started by thinking of a couple of the shows that I watch and came up with a few characters:
walter white (breaking bad), john locke (lost), tommy pickles (rugrats), Aang (avatar: the last airbender) , masuka (dexter), varys, (game of thrones) uncle junior (the sopranos), henry spencer (psych), larry david (curb your enthusiasm... actually I can't picture him, is he kind of bald?), tobias funke (arrested development), kevin malone (the office, US), picard (star trek) - Pictures to come later
As you can see, I've included 'partial balds.'

I don't watch any old shows, so it would be really awesome if someone could think of some gimme's from old shows, like MASH, Beverly Hillbillies, happy days, i love lucy, bonanza, macgruber (is that even a show? I think I saw it on a quiz once)... anywho, as you can see I no longer know what I'm talking about.. so hopefully we have at least one curator that watches tv from before 1995. ;]

MovieGuru, maybe we could come up with the list of characters to be included in the quiz to begin with. I'm happy to do most of the picture searching myself, since I'll know the general size I'll be looking for. Obviously, I'll take on board any suggestions you have when we get to that stage and if I come up short on suitable pictures for any of the characters I'll make a post on this thread for assistance.

Feel free to email me directly with any concerns.

Other suggestions, George Constanza, Kojak, John-Luc Picard, Homer Simpson

My suggestion would have to be Squidward Tentacles:). If not maybe a bonus answer without a picture. Maybe Jay Pritchet from Modes Family? What do you think of those?

Citkeane, that sounds perfect. I was worried about how that was going to work, so I'm really happy you offered.

And... Doctore (spartacus), Puck (Glee.. he shaves his mohawk), stewie (family guy.. he has like 8 individual hairs which i count as bald)

Teddy, Good suggestions.. I'm not sure if Jay is quite 'bald' since he does have that patch on top of his head still, and squidward certainly looks like a bald character so that might work (even though every character on the show is bald..except sandy, but sometimes she does take off her fur suit.. so maybe she would work even better)

OK, I'm on board with this.

As a sign of solidarity, like athletes do for "team" ventures,  I think everyone should do what I just did, and shave their head.

What, you want a picture to verify that?

Anyways, I'll do some research...

What about Howie Mandel. He's not fictional, but he's a popular TV personality and we could use a shot from Deal or no Deal, his most popular work. (America's Got Talent could also work, but I think he's more well known for DOND).

Some oldies:

Fred Mertz, (William Frawley) I Love Lucy

Mel Cooley (Richard Deacon) The Dick Van Dyke Show

Uncle Fester / Fester Addams (Jackie Coogan)  The Addams Family

Elmer Fudd

Mr. Magoo

Lou Grant (Edward Asner) Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant; I think he would qualify...had  a bit of hair up top, but not much.

The Chief / Thaddeus  (Edward Platt)  Get Smart   ditto above

Not quite as old:

Steven Harper (Chi McBride) Boston Public

Walter Skinner (Mitch Peleggi) X-Files

Cyril (popestcyril)

There have been a couple of "real people" bald quizzes done:

One of our own, BanjoZebra already made this one

and puckett86 made this one

So, perhaps sticking to characters is a good idea.

Ah, thanks - popestcyril has done my research for me!

As to the last name on his list, we'd have to go with popestcyril (character), rather than Cyril (real), if we were to include you.  In fact, we'd need to know you were on a TV show once... do you still have your ears?  :)

Well, I have been on TV, but not in a series!  And unfortunately, or fortunately for me, I have a fairly full head of hair, though the hairline is receding.  So even though those who know me consider me a character, I think you will have to remove my inadvertent self nomination.

Cyril, the not yet bald

Citkeane, I'm not sure how many pictures you want to put on, but I think we are probably set..

I split them up into groups of real, cartoon, and the 1 backup that I just wasn't feeling as much after I found it. Cut as many out as you want. Go with whichever have quality pictures available, but try to keep the more popular shows in (and you def have to keep aang, it'll be a thrill for those who like anime.. also I just love aang).

Oh, and I was thinking we can have the quiz say can you name the bald/balding character... so no need to worry about analyzing hair to scalp ratio.

Frank Reynolds (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia)
walter white (breaking bad)
john locke (lost)
masuka (dexter)
varys (game of thrones)
Tony Soprano (the sopranos)
henry spencer (psych)
larry david (curb your enthusiasm)
tobias funke (arrested development)
kevin malone (the office, US)
Phillip Banks (Fresh Prince)
Vic Mackey (the shield)
George Constanza (seinfeld)
Kojak (kojak)
John-Luc Picard (star trek)
jay (modern family)

Fred Mertz, (William Frawley) I Love Lucy
Mel Cooley (Richard Deacon) The Dick Van Dyke Show
Uncle Fester / Fester Addams (Jackie Coogan)  The Addams Family
Lou Grant (Edward Asner) Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Chief / Thaddeus  (Edward Platt)  Get Smart
Steven Harper (Chi McBride) Boston Public
Walter Skinner (Mitch Peleggi) X-Files
Detective Andy Sipowicz (NYPD Blue)
Frasier Crane (frasier)
Dick Solomon (3rd Rock from the Sun)

Cartoons:

Aang (avatar: the last airbender)
Elmer Fudd (looney tunes)
Mr. Magoo (The Mr. Magoo Show)
tommy pickles (rugrats)
Homer Simpson (simpsons)
Professor (Futurama)
squidward (spongebob)
caillou (caillou)

Backups:
lex luthor (smallville)

20 sounds like a good number and I think we should whittle them down here on the thread, in case anyone wants to jump in with an opinion.

I think the obvious musts are:

In no particular order,

1. Walter White
2. Tobias Funke
3. Homer Simpson
4. Jean-Luc Picard
5. John Locke
6. Larry David
7. Elmer Fudd
8. Tony Soprano
9. Frasier Crane
10. Uncle Fester
11. Tommy Pickles
12. Kojak
13. Aang

So 7 to round out the 20. I'm sure some of the others definitely deserve inclusion but I haven't see quite a few of these shows. Any characters not on the list that you have strong opinions about?

Although it is not up to me, I suggest Squidward Tentacles bedside a big part of Spongebob humor is making fun of Squidwards lack of hair.

Spongebob is one of those shows I haven't seen enough of. So is it a running joke that he has no hair, if so that might make some Spongebob fans chuckle, which would be a good enough reason to include him for me. Also, Teddy, I hope it goes without saying that all suggestions are welcome. MovieGuru has the final call as the quiz 'owner', and I might have a vested interest as the person who'll be editing the picture, but it is still intended to be a group collaboration.

I personally don’t know all the characters citkeane listed as obvious musts, though I trust all of them are worthy, of course, with one possible exception "apart from worthiness":

I'm not sure about including Larry David - even though that is the character name, it is also the actor's name; and his image was included in BanjoZebra's quiz.  I'd like to avoid duplication of images with that one, and stick to purely fictional characters, if MovieGuru agrees.

I’ll strongly concur with:

  • Homer Simpson
  • Jean-Luc Picard
  • John Locke
  • Elmer Fudd
  • Tony Soprano
  • Frasier Crane
  • Uncle Fester
  • Kojak

I’ll also strongly lobby for (*asterisked ones are newly added suggestions):

  • *Mr. Clean – iconic TV commercial figure for decades
  • George Costanza – Seinfeld was uber-popular (note the corrected spelling of the last name)
  • Stewie Griffin – Family Guy was (and is) huge (for some reason, our Quiz-Owner, who had suggested him, did not re-list him above in the “1st cut” post above)
  • *Charlie Brown – huge icon known primarily from TV, on all the holiday specials airing for decades
  • Lou Grant – 5-emmy-winning role for Asner on two hit shows. Bravo’s 35th greatest TV character
  • Andy Sipowicz – 4-emmy-winning role for Franz on hit show.  Bravo’s 23rd greatest TV character
  • Mr. Magoo – C’mon how could we not!

How about Phillip McGraw (Dr. Phil)? By the way, this is a really good idea for a quiz and has a lot of potential for a clever and funny title, but I just can't think of one.

Maybe Tommy from Rugrats could stand to be dropped for Charlie Brown and/or Mr. Magoo to add a little more range in terms of time?

There are some that I'm not familiar with such as Varys and Frank Reynolds, as I've never seen those shows, but I'm willing to take your word for them if you think they deserve a place.

Game of Thrones, in particular, does seem to have a very avid fan base so if Varys is one of the central characters chances are he warrants a place.

In the hopes of fast tracking this a little can we settle on some certain inclusion?

Perhaps, the following:

1. Walter White
2. Tobias Funke
3. Homer Simpson
4. Jean-Luc Picard
5. John Locke
6. Elmer Fudd
7. Tony Soprano
8. Frasier Crane
9. Uncle Fester
10. Kojak
11. George Constanza

It might help to name a core group and then whittle down the final few.

This is a fun quiz, and I think there are a whole number of combinations that could work.

I'm grateful to MovieGuru for initiating and developing the idea; and to citkeane for offering technical assistance as well as working with MovieGuru to whittle down the list.

Since it seems like all suggestions have been made, at this point, I'm comfortable with you two making the final decision, and with MovieGuru steering it to conclusion.

Thanks,

It's coming along nicely; great work MovieGuru & citkeane!   It's a vibrant arrangement, and a nice cross-section of characters.

OK, a few thoughts/questions:
  • If we accept "Homer" does that mean we should accept other first names? Most people know "George Costanza" as "George", for example...
  • Has there been substantial "evidence" to show that quizzes of this sort "should" include the option of giving the names of shows as answers? I seem to recall some other image quizzes which were difficult for players -- until they were changed to accept them. To me, it almost seems too easy to name the shows; however -- if  they are better received this way, and it is sort-of expected this way these days, then I support it.
  • I'm not a formatting genius, but is there any way to keep the answer cells the same size? It's hard to keep track of the "ones you are still missing" (i.e., which row & column) since the text in many cells wraps when the answers are accepted, thus distorting the layout). So, as a corollary to that, is it perhaps better (or is it "too late") to use numbers to match images to answers?
  • Are you guys planning to also add a bit of color or bordering to the answer grid?

Also Anyone Else should feel  to weigh in on these matters, or any other aspects of the quiz.  Let's all remember that collaboration is welcomed. Even though ideas and suggestions may not be utilized, I'd like to at least make sure we cover everything that could affect each quiz's performance.

I probably will want a game note, but I'll think on that for a moment.

Thanks, and, again, great work!

All first names are accepted.
All of FTM's movie picture quizzes accept characters or movie titles (and she has many published).
We don't want to put numbers on the photos because if it gets published, the admins will cut the picture up into boxes. I'll check on answer-box sizes.
And I could do a little formatting I suppose :)

Just popping over to this thread to say I think you guys have done a great job with this. The pic choices are excellent. I noticed one exceedingly small thing which I hesitate to even bring up but the Picard pic is from one of the TNG movies not the TV show. I don't think it matters (his head is the same after all) but I just wanted to make it known in case it wasn't already. Y'all know the nitpickers out there ! ;)

Thanks zalk; very astute observation.  In this case I think we are covered though, due to the wording of the "Can you name..." instructions:

Can you name the bald/balding characters or the TV shows they are from?

So, in this case, the character, Picard, although depicted in the movie, is still from the TV show "Star Trek TNG"

Ironically, at one point I had been contemplating changing those instructions to say "Can you name the bald/balding characters or the TV show from which their image is depicted".

So, I'm glad I didn't recommend that to MovieGuru and citkeane.  This also increases the "gettability" of quiz answers, by allowing players to enter "Cheers" for the Frasier character, for example.  I recently scoured the resumes of all of the actors as well to try to enter as many alternate shows they appeared on with a bald/balding appearance.

But thanks!  We ALWAYS want to get even the "pickiest" of things taken care of in our quizzes!

Thanks to everyone who worked on this now-published quiz, particularly to MovieGuru and citkeane for the work they put into finding the images and constructing it.

Also to those of you who offered suggestions, alternate answers, or otherwise helped during the testing phase.

Thanks guys, and congratulations to the group as a whole.

Oh, by the way, as far as this group is concerned, "once curator, always a curator", so citkeane, though an editor-only at this point, is surely a part of this group, and free to continue in it, and participate as he so-chooses moving forward :)
